Fleeing the country in its headlong rush to war in Vietnam, a young American drops out of school and goes to Paris to write. After a year and a half, he realizes that if you have to work to live there, Paris is a lot like any other city, except that it’s full of Americans who came there to write. One night he and a friend go to the Paris Hilton to attend a lecture on a “great new movement that is sweeping the world.” A month later the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi invites him to India to attend a three-month teacher-training course on Transcendental Meditation. Based on journals Blakely kept at the time, the second half of this book is an eye-witness account of that gathering on the banks of the Ganges in the spring of 1968, which Blakely describes as “a lot like Woodstock but without all the people and the noise, and lasting a lot longer.” While this book is primarily a personal journey, coming to terms with a crucial period in the author’s life, it also provides a close-up portrait of the Maharishi, from someone who caught a glimpse of the wizard behind the curtain. In addition, it contains vignettes of other people who also happened to attend that course in Rishikesh---including George Harrison, John Lennon, Mia Farrow, and Mike Love---that readers will find entertaining and informative.

A Heart-Thumping and Goose-Pimpling Page Turner
By paperboy
Imagine it's 1968 and the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has personally invited you to attend a Transcendental Meditation training course in India. On the dime of this world-famous spiritual leader, you attend a three month camp at beautiful Rishikesh with the intention of becoming a teacher in this up and coming movement. One morning you arise early for breakfast and find John Lennon sitting at the end of your table. The other Beatles join you. Mia Farrow, Mike Love, and other celebrities at the ashram instantly become your peers. Trouble unfolds in paradise and what you and the others experience is so bizarre it inspires songs on the White Album. You find love with a very pretty fellow student only to find more drama - more extreme than ever.
It truly happened.
Richard Blakely was not a celebrity, rather an intelligent, sensitive, and adventurous young student from California. Disenchanted with a Vietnam-consumed America and his Christian Science-based home, he grabbed his portable typewriter and headed for Paris. Out of curiosity, he attended a lecture on TM and discovered something special to him. Eventually he discovered this was a very ambitious effort lead by a very ambitious man.
Blakely's insightful writing takes us through his troubled suburban youth, his attempts to acclimate to adulthood, and his inevitable retreat to a far off land. Most of the book focuses on his time at the Rishikesh ashram and his engaging personal interactions with iconic musicians and actors along with other students. We are treated with an abundance of humor (his mother found out where he'd gone when her friend saw his photo in Life magazine standing with Mia Farrow). The story becomes a real page-turner as we discover the true motives behind the Maharishi, his shocking behavior, and the ripple effect along the Ganges that spring.

A FAB-ulous Personal Narrative About The Beatles, Transcendental Meditation and the 1960s
By C. Zimmermann
The Beatles 1968 visit to the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Rishikesh, India is considered a watershed moment in pop culture history, an event that marked a new era of eastern-western spiritual exchange whose ripple effects can still be felt today.
Richard Blakely just happened to be there. "The Secret of the Mantras" is his own bit of personal history combined with an insider's story of this seminal event.
Paris - 1968: Blakely is a grad-school dropout. By day, he is working a dreary job as an English language instructor. At night, he is trying to live out his literary ambitions and confront his past by writing stories about his childhood growing up in a Christian Science household in California. On a whim, he attends a few sessions on Transcendental Meditation and is immediately drawn into the practice.
Shortly thereafter, through a case of mistaken identity - the Maharishi thought Blakely to be French - he is invited to join the Maharishi and his followers on a three-month teacher training program in India. Suddenly, Blakely is transported out of his drab existence and on a whirlwind trip to India, with a group of the Maharishi's followers, both young and old, as well as his newest and most famous adherents: Mia and Prudence Farrow.
After a journey through the subcontinent that is equal parts Kerouac and Kipling-esque, Blakely arrives at the ashram for the course. Several days in Blakely notices the most unexpected guests, John Lennon and George Harrison. Soon Paul McCartney and Ringo Star join in, along with fellow rock stars, Donovan and Mike Love.
With a novelist's eye for detail, Blakely lovingly captures the events that followed. Part summer camp, part jam session, part love-in and part religious awakening, the next few months prove to be life changing for everyone involved. While the Beatles are penning tracks that eventually laid the foundation for the "The White Album," Blakely is undergoing a transformation both personal and spiritual that will leave him forever changed.
"The Secret of the Mantras" should have a broad appeal for readers interested in this era.
Beatles fans will appreciate his observations about the Fab Four's time in Rishikesh. Though the trip has been well-documented, Blakely provides a unique account in that he was neither a journalist nor someone obsessed with fame. He shows how, for a brief moment, the Beatles were really just a group of guys looking to take a break from chaos of their lives and search for their own brand of salvation.
The book serves as an equally informative history of modern Transcendental Meditation and captures the core of a religious movement that was in its infancy in the west. Blakely takes us inside the mind of a practitioner laying out the spiritual benefits and psychological pitfalls of the practice, while at the same time exploring how the movement thrived and suffered at the hands its all-too-human leaders.
In the end, the book's biggest strength is it that brings to life the contradictions of life in the 1960s. Blakely explores the feelings of freedom and idealism that led him first to Paris and India in the first place. Then, as almost a counterbalance, he shows the turmoil he faced upon his return to France as that country, and perhaps the whole world, was going through its own existential crisis from which it never quite recovered.

Weak for the young and beautiful
By Judith Bourque
For me "Confirmation" was the main dish served in Richard Blakely's "The Secret of the Mantras." I don't need confirmation for what I experienced as Maharishi's lover in 1970, but he provides a witness account of the yogi's weaknesses when it came to beautiful, young women at the ashram in 1968. I knew this guru well enough to know that Richard's story is spot on as he describes all the tricky patterns from a position of dry scepticism. Yet he is honest enough to admit that in spite of it all his meditations were deeply satisfying. For dessert I was given an informative and detailed account of what it was like when the Beatles were in Rishikesh with Maharishi from someone else who was actually there. The entire meal was garnished with witty humor, making me laugh out loud as he captures all the antics connected to the ashram royal treatment of celebrities as well as Maharishi's
verbal idiosyncrasies, like dat...like dat. I think Richard Blakely was the perfect author to give us the gift of an eye witness account of this musically and spiritually important period in the 20th century.
