In this updated version of Money-Saving Strategies for the Owner/Builder (1981), Roy offers his personal experiences and those of others who have successfully achieved the status of living mortgage-free. It is obvious that he has been greatly influenced by Henry David Thoreau, whom he refers to as "the father of the owner/builder movement in America." Roy stresses that to become an owner/ builder requires a high energy level, good health, and the motivation to educate oneself about home building. In addition, he instructs readers in acquiring a "grubstake" (his term for accumulating enough savings to purchase land and build on it), constructing a temporary shelter near the site of the permanent home, becoming one's own contractor, using alternative building materials, and building small. Roy's ideas are radical but worth investigating if your desire is to live mortgage-free. A Good Start

Anything that gets people to think outside the box is likely to be a good thing in our society and this book does that. I liked the ideas in a general sense, but at the level of the individual, applying the concepts of the author would require skills, discipline and bearing hardships that I wouldn't impose on a loved one.
Living outside the mainstream is tough, not easy. Wells and septic systems make for headaches and hardships. This is all fine for the back-to-the-land type but if what you're after is economical self-sufficiency on a shoestring there are methods that are more practical.
These methods still require that you think outside the box but just outside the box vice wayyyy outside the box where this author takes you.
The typical 30 or 20 year mortgage in the USA today is a real waste of time and money. Wasted time cannot be recovered and wasting money is simply poor stewardship of hard earned resources.
It is possible to purchase real estate in such a way as to have the effect of being mortgage-free from day one not five or ten years from now. I live in an upper middle-class neighborhood, have an average income, and pay less than $200 a month towards my mortgage.
Actually, a mortgage is not an inherently good or bad thing, it's just a thing. How one uses the tool of a mortgage is where people tend to sink their financial ship.

Good General Overview limited in detail

Mr. Roy's book is a great primer on thinking about different strategies for owning a home that don't involve the normal process. The book is primarily based on the idea that if one can or wants to live a life outside of the consumerist norm then it is possible to own a home. Primarily, he advocates that the person who wants to own a home and not spend the next thirty years of their lives as an indentured servent to the bank that they should do as much work as they can themselves. Anyone who is interested or willing to do the work in building or renovating a home, has a low income, wants to maintain a simple life but doesn't know where to start will find this book has useful ideas to get you started. Those who desire to live in the best neighborhoods, are uninterested or unwilling to do the work on their own home, or not likely to accept a simple lifestyle will likely scoff at the notions this book presents.

The main thrust of this book advocates that people choose not to participate in the suburban "keeping up with the Jones's" lifestyle. For some this may be a revolutionary idea. This, of course, is not a new idea but is not one that is commonly embraced by Western civilization. For those that are already outside of the consumerist mainstream this book will probably not cover any new ground. He does provide a sensible arguement against the "death-pledge" (the Old French etymology for "mortgage"). There are a great many people that believe that the only way they can ever own a house is through the 30 year loan route. Mr. Roy makes a case that if one has the desire, discipline and patience that they can own a home without going to the bank to get a loan.

The book provides a general set of strategies that are primarily useful in rural area. The author recommends that one lives a simple lifestyle, builds on land that would not be considered particularly valuable by others, the home is built by the owner using as many salvaged (inexpensive but high quality) materials as possible, and that the builder reduces as many living cost as possible. One example of cost reduction is the use of some sort of temporary structure on the property while the home is being built in order to reduce or eliminate the cost of renting or paying on a mortgage in another home.

The book provides a good overview of methods that have been used to achieve home ownership in rural areas. It does address the idea of the same sort of idea in urban areas by saying that it's not bloody likely. This reviewer tends to agree with that but others may have differing opinions.

An Excellent Resource for All

Roy start his book with the basics; how to save money in your current situation. Many of these suggestions are simple, yet effective. I especially liked his comment that "eating out is entertainment, not sustenance". Roy shows us how to reduce our monthly expenses so that we will be able to save enough money to buy property with strategies that are later developed in his book. Another section that was extremely useful to me and my husband was the section where Roy describes all of the things he did wrong when he first purchased land and built on said land. I am sure that learning of his mistakes will prevent us from making those same mistakes when we decide to buy our land and build. As a couple looking toward homesteading in the near future, this book was worth it's weight in gold to us. I am sure we will refer to it often in our quest for our little slice of the American Dream.

Good Book

Good book for those who are new to linear models in R.

Pros:
- The datasets that are associated with the faraway package.
- Detailed code and plenty of problems to work through.
- Lots of online support.

Cons:
- A couple sections were a little foggy. I would have liked a more in depth discussion of what/why a particular method was chosen or applied.

Great for a Professional Learning New Topics

As a Property and Casualty actuary, I've worked extensively with generalized linear models, but had recently become introduced to mixed effects models and wanted to dig deeper. The organization of the book made it very easy to find the parts of the book that were relevant for me. The writing was top notch and the examples were well chosen and discussed. This is an excellent book for an analytics professional who wants to add to his/her personal toolbox.

BTW, Amazon shows this review as having been written by my wife, but Stephen Prevatt actually wrote this review.

C. F. JEFF WU, PhD, is H. C. Carver Professor, Department of Statistics and Industrial and Operations Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and a recipient of the COPSS Award and numerous other awards and prizes. He is the author of about 100 published papers.

MICHAEL HAMADA, PhD, is a technical staff member in the Statistical Sciences Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. He has published 30 papers and has won the Technometrics Wilcoxon Prize and the ASQC Brumbaugh Award.

modern and thorough text that includes Taguchi designs

My review of this book was for the first edition. But as a practice (not a particularly good one) when amazon gets a later edition of a book (in this case a second edition)they keep the old reviews and do not inform the reader that the reviews were for an earlier edition. Also amazon has a policy of only allowing one review per reviewer. So even though I have the second edition I can not write a separated review. So my choice here is to put the review of the sedond edition in front of the review of the first on an edited review.

The first edition was mainly intended as a graduate text in experimental design with some emphasis on the theoretical development of robust designs (included what are called Taguchi designs). After the experience of teaching out of the text and based on feedback from ther instructors the authors found that there was value in expanding an already large volume to make it accessible to undergraduate students including students who do not have background in regression analysis. So a new Chapter 1 provides that introduction. Also Chapter 2 provides a more gentle introduction to design. The contents of chapters 1 and 2 covers Chapter 1 of the first edition and more. Chapter 2-13 of the first edition are now Chapters 3-14 in the second. Chapters 3-5 have been reorganized to better suit teaching the subject. Other than the there are a few corrections to errors in the first edition and a marking of the more difficult material so that instructors, particularly those teaching an undergraduate course can skip certain sections. Of course as the research continues to develop some new material and new references have been included. There are 9 new topics mention in the preface including sample size determination and a section on split plot designs. There is more discussion of Bayesian methods and random effects ANOVA models.

The review of the first edition now follows verbatim:
Jeff Wu got his Ph.D. in statistics from UC Berkeley. He started his career at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he was influenced by George Box and was exposed to many important practical design problems. Jeff quickly established himself as a top notch theoretical statistician publishing some landmark papers in the Annals of Statistics. As his career developed at Wisconsin and later in Canada and at Michigan he made fundamental contributions to survey sampling and experimental design. This book is basically a sequel to the classic book by Box, Hunter and Hunter. It includes all aspects of experimental design and is very thorough in covering all the classical topics and the new area of robust design. It includes many recent advances by the authors (Wu and Hamada) in the 1990 and even the late 1990s (papers from 1997 and 1998 are referenced).
The book is intended for scientists and engineers as well as statisticians. The authors deliberately introduce the concepts gently, starting with a real problem and constructing and analyzing a design type considered in the chapter. This is done consistently from chapters 3-13.

They start with the simplest ideas and designs and build up. Chapter 1 deals with single factor experiments and Chapter 2 with experiments with more than one factor, starting with two. Section 1.1 provides an historical perspective which I find valuable. It leads to a classification of design problems that are distinct and they show how they arose in very different contexts. They do a good job of setting the stage for the remaining chapters. The categories are (1)Treatment Comparisons (the traditional agricultural experiment), (2) Variable Screening, (3) Response Surface Exploration, (4) System Optimization and (5) System Robustness. Although the theory of optimal designs is not covered in detail, the role of optimal designs is mentioned as is the early work of Kiefer (section 4.4.2)and reference to the recent book by Pukelsheim is given.

In Chapter 4 on fractional factorial experiments at two levels, concepts of resolution and aberration are clearly explained. I think it helps that the authors make these concepts concrete through the illustrative examples. I have often looked at standard design texts and found myself confused about the distinction between resolution III, IV and V designs.

There are several features that set this book apart from other books on design of experiments. Some attention is given to the one-factor-at-a-time approach. Most books ignore this commonly used approach and its many drawbacks. The authors explain its four main disadvantages and illustrate the problem with a design example. In my experience in industry, many engineers are not trained well in statistics and although it may seem clear to statisticians that one-at-a-time approaches overlook interactions or dependencies between variables, the engineers often do not. They see this approach as a way to simplify their search for the best operating conditions. I published an article in the mathematical modeling literature that also was intended to demonstrate the value of statistical design methods over the one-at-a-time approach. Latin square and Graeco-Latin Squares are covered as well as the more common factorial and fractional factorial designs. They also cover randomized blocks and balanced incomplete blocks. The concept of pairing (blocking) is well illustrated with a particular analysis of variance done both with and without pairing. Underlying assumptions are brought out and never hidden. The principles that are the basis for selection of fractional factorial designs are made explcit. Practical nonregular designs including the popular Plackett-Burman designs are well covered. Chapter 10 provides the basis and motivation for robust parameter designs. It also includes a discussion of the signal-to-noise ratio approach of Taguchi and describes some of its weaknesses. Chapter 11 looks at various performance measures for robust parameter design and compares several designs with respect to these parameters.

In the early chapters, the analysis of variance is presented clearly with all the required assumptions. Multiple comparison methods are discussed. Good references, both recent and old, are provided on each topic. My only disappointment was the omission of the recent resampling approaches to p-value adjustment due primarily to Westfall and Young.

Another interesting and unique aspect of the book is the presentation of Bayesian variable selection strategies. This introduces much of the interesting new work in Bayesian methods using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods.

Chapters 12 and 13 cover topics you will not find in other experimental design books. Chapter 12 deals with experiments to improve reliability and 13 with nonnormal data. Use of generalized linear models and transformation of variables is well covered in the book.

This book is a worthy sequel to Box, Hunter and Hunter. It is a great introductory book for experimental design courses and a great reference source for scientists, engineers and statisticians. It is already gaining in popularity.

Not in touch with Grad Students...

I think this book has great potential. Unfortunately, it suffers from a few of the most fairly common Graduate Level text book problems.
Use of the 'et cetera' function, or a failure to work out examples. I'm not sure if I'm in a minority with this opinion, but I believe, after many years as a graduate student that examples should be worked on in their entirety. Unfortunately, this in not the case with this textbook. There are numerous places in this text where the authors reference, with great generality, pervious half-worked examples or formulas. Not only does this make the text sometimes difficult to follow, it also reduces the usefulness of the book as a self teaching tool.
The text also fails to include even some of the solutions to its exercises. I'm not sure why many authors fail to include even some of the solutions to their chapter exercises. In my opinion, I believe that this is a serious weakness in text. Most professors who teach graduate level courses create their own problem sets. By failing to include even partial solution sets, the authors minimizes or completely destroys any benefit of including exercises in the text (especially if you are not reading this text as part of a course). There is no benefit of working out exercises if you can not correct or even identify your mistakes.
If I had to have just one "Design of Experiments" book, I would not choose this one. Although there are many great things about this book, it is notoriously light on Split-Plot experiments. In fact, Split-plot experiments (which are very common) only receive a cursory mention. If you are looking for Books on Designs of experiments, I suggest you look at "Design and Analysis of Experiments" by Douglas Montgomery, or maybe even the older "Statistical Design and Analysis of Experiments" by Mason, Gunst, and Hess.

A few insights

I was hoping for a miracle book, and thought that there should be more ideas to make for success. But! When I thought about what he wrote about getting students to speak...?! That is indeed the most important part of the English lesson. I started using his ideas in my classes and I have found it very helpful. So...the book is a good buy for myself. I have also lived almost 10 years abroad teaching English and the author is correct about the types of students that one has to teach. If he deleted the profanity, the book size would be reduced by 60%, and I would recommed that! However, the few genuine ideas won from suffering (he's lived in Russia you know!), can really make the book a practical buy.

Brutally course but immensely helpful

I understand that teaching in another country can feel a lot like teaching without rules. I understand how someone would want to take advantage of that to write a book that clearly ignores all of the cultural norms we associate with the teaching profession, and I'll admit, there is some valuable information in this book, but it's rough. It drips with foul language and bad attitude. It's like getting something to eat from a garbage can (something I see far too often here in Cambodia); it may be nutritious, but your going to have to scrape the disgusting parts off before you ingest it. So, if you don't mind that the prose is unprofessional and foul and are willing to scavenge for the nuggets of truth, this book has some great insights from someone with real world experience. You'll likely get more and better ideas than you would from many scholarly tomes.

Pure gold

I'm about seven months into my first TEFL teaching experience in China.

100% recommendation: You should buy this book.

One: Let me tell you from experience: the author nails the experience I've had here *precisely*, in a way that's impossible to describe to someone who hasn't been here.

Two: The lesson ideas are short, no-bulls***, and (trust me if you haven't been here) PRECISELY what you need to hear to figure out how to survive in some of these English "Training schools". (We will use this term very loosely.) I used material from his method today. It works. It's not beautiful and sweet and inspired: it's practical and pragmatic, and designed to keep the teacher alive.

Three: This book uses bitterly black humor and language to describe what is sometimes an unspeakably asinine experience, which makes me feel a lot better. It also will upset some of our more gentle readers, so don't take it too harshly, or better yet don't read it if this is you.

The youngest child of a mentally ill mother and an absent father, Brown (b. 1957) grew up in the shadow of Hollywood with two older siblings: a brother, a moderately successful actor until his suicide at 27, and a sister who also dreamed of acting but took her life at 44. Brown's tales are harrowing: at five, he and his mother traveled from their San Jose home to San Francisco, where she set an apartment building ablaze. A privilege to read.

There's something terribly disturbing about confessional writing. In the hands of a man or woman at the top of their craft, a writer of immense skill and transparency, the experience for the reader can border on the pathological. Honesty without the slightest hint of pretence, particularly from an experienced and intelligent individual, knowing full well that what they tell the world is deeply personal and the honest to goodness truth, is rare. There's always some other agenda. For example, the two most famous confessional pieces in world literature are St. Augustine's Confessions and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's The Confessions; both author's had an agenda in writing these works, whether for purposes of religious conversion or literary immortality - both achieved their respective ends. Brown's book, however, is different. This is a writer telling a story because this particular story needed to be told. I get the impression that Brown needed to communicate his life in the only form he knew how to as a writer. This is a memoir about writing, addiction, alcoholism, relationships and human responsibility. It is about madness, suicide, compulsion, irony and love. This is a heartbreaking story that leaves the reader with a tiny glimmer of hope. As a true confessional does, it doesn't raise feelings of sympathy or thoughts of self-righteous condescension, but a real empathy, because we've all experienced, in varying degrees, this man's life.
Brown's vivid and deceptively rendered prose reminds me of a style of American writing that's all its own. One reads this simple, clear-eyed style of writing and thinks that it would be easy to imitate. Wrong. It appears simple but is awfully difficult to do. Brown's prose adds to the subject matter, making his family obsessions and chemical escapes much harsher, difficult to swallow, but in the end, inspiring and troubling.
The L.A. Diaries is a rare memoir because it is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else. Brown is a fine writer and this work was a privilege to read.

A Modern American Tragedy

"The Los Angeles Diaries" continue the tragic story begun in the book "Final Performance". dealing with the author, James Brown's

ability to cope with the issues of a tumultous childhood, which contributed toward the suicides of his older siblings Barry (a rising TV/movie star of the 1970's) and Marilyn.

The first part of the book describes the frustrations of the author (a college professor) at his ill-starred attempts to sell screenplays to Hollywood, and the familial way of handling disappointment with drugs and alcohol. Interspersed throughout

are vignettes (told in flashback) of his childhood, some sentimental, some chilling.

Brown also relates the difficulty of maintaining a sober facade before college professors and students(well acquainted with the

drug scene) who view him cynically.

One bright spot is the hilarious narrative of Jame Brown's attempt to mollify his angry wife with a pot-bellied pig as a peace offering.

The Machiavellian porker is named Daisy, and Brown's problems

burgeon in direct proportion to Daisy's expensive appetite -

and expansive girth.

Man and pig butt heads; in a contest between man and animal,

the animal will win hands down because it has "cuteness" on its side. (The end of the chapter is a riot...)

The second half of "The Los Angeles Diaries" is depressing, describing the downward spiral, and subsequent suicides of

Brown's brother, Barry, and his sister, Marilyn.

By the end of his life, Barry Brown was out of control: impersonating a police officer (a character from a movie) and

drinking compulsively. He shot himself to death at age 27.

Marilyn Brown attempted to wean herself from alcohol and drugs, but past demons prompted her one night to climb onto the railing of an overpass, then fling herself to her death in the dry riverbed below.

The book ends on an optimistic note; while in South Dakota, James Brown resolved to go cold turkey, or die - he made it.

But - his two books ("The Los Angeles Diaries" and "Final Performance") are touching memorials by the survivor to the siblings who didn't make it...

A new American classic.

Terrific concept, terrific execution

There are a number of things going really right for The Los Angeles Diaries, but none moreso than Brown's conception of his memoir - each chapter a different essay detailing a different discrete portion of his life, so each chapter will jump back and forth a decade or two. It could be disjointed, but instead it's the notion of one consciousness getting out exactly what it needs to for our understanding and letting us crane our necks a bit to fill in the details. This works because James Brown is a writer of such fierce conviction that the notions carry over from one section to another, the reality of his experience connected by spurts and sources of identity, linked by the fierce honesty of his experience. If you're like me, this is hardly the first "addiction memoir" you've picked up (it's practically a genre in itself), but it's especially distinct by a narrator who doesn't "hit bottom" in the typical fashion; Brown is a man always on the fringes of total oblivion managing to salvage himself. It makes for an unforgettable, even inspiring read, but it does leave a couple giant questions - notably, how was the ultimate breakthrough allowing him to remain clean so different from his others? He'd discussed other times he spent days or weeks without drugs or booze, what made this book's ultimate conclusion so distinct? It's abrupt ending won't answer that question, which is tantalizing, but it will leave you with an indelible picture of hope, and a gloriously specific, scrappy image of survival.
