Review
“Rising star Van Sciver once again skewers the self-important male figure, in this case a terrible writer who fancies himself a great novelist and pushes himself onto everyone.” (Rob McMonigal - Publishers Weekly)

“...Van Sciver’s tireless work ethic and ever-refining comedic chops made him the cartoonist to beat [in 2015]. In a year of highlights, however,Fante Bukowskiis the volume to recommend to anyone still in the dark. ...Van Sciver knows how to give the reader just enough to enjoy the sensation of holding poor Fante in pleasant contempt.” (Tim O'Neil - The A.V. Club)

“Short and sweet, humorous, needling to any aspiring writer but also inspiring, because as much as it's about you, the book's about someone nothing like you. All wrapped up in a perfect little package that I wish I could put in my pocket and carry around to read. Oh, wait, I can put it in my pocket and carry it around, awesome!” (Jeffrey Brown (Funny Misshapen Body, Jedi Academy) - Tech Times)

...Van Sciver's genius here is twofold: his goofy artwork, which always takes the narrative to surprising places, and the punchiness of his dialogue, which manages to convey the deadly serious consequences of Fante's hilarious goof-ups and general awkwardness. ... Fante Bukowskiis filled with sharp, extremely observant gags...; it is easily one of the best new comics releases of 2015.

” (Aditya Mani Jha - The Sunday Guardian)

“With the graphic novellaFante Bukowski, Noah Van Sciver’s penned the funniest thing I’ve read all year. ... At its deepest,Fante Bukowskistands as a commentary on hordes of recognition-hungry artists with nothing to say, but as a straight parody,Fante Bukowskiis hilarious enough to summon tears.” (Tyler R. Kane - Paste)

“Noah Van Sciver gives us the sensational character find of 2015 in the person of Fante Bukowski, a man so obsessed with his idols that he changed his name to match theirs, although he never quite got around to making himself a good enough writer to live up to their example – but he doesn’t quite get that and that is all the fun of Van Sciver’s brilliantly told story.” (Brian Cronin - Comic Book Resources)

“Fanteis timeless...” (Josh Bayer (Raw Power, Theth) - Tech Times)

“A cynic would interpret Bukowski as a talentless whiner, passing real opportunity for a narcissistic fantasy, if it weren't for moments that allow the reader to genuinely empathize with him. ...Van Sciver's art captures the charm of alternative comics, a haphazard style that perfectly mirrors Fante's own attempts at authenticity.” (Cody Ray Shafer - Under the Radar)

“It’s a funny short read and perfectly captures the kind of blind drive and self delusion that any artist probably needs to accomplish anything.” (Tom Devlin (Drawn & Quarterly))

“For anyone who has made a serious attempt at being a published author, reading this book is probably what a professional musician feels like watchingThis is Spinal Tap. It’s hilarious, but also occasionally accurate to the point of being uncomfortable―which makes it even funnier. ... That’s not to say you have to be a failed or successful writer to enjoy this. But if you are, then you’ll probably get more of the jokes. Or get more out of them. Either way, it’s great.” (Nick Nafpliotis - AiPT)

“Van Sciver can tell a joke on the page and is kind of endlessly fussy and prolific in a way his comics pulsate with life and an eagerness to please... It's a good looking presentation, too.” (Tom Spurgeon - The Comics Reporter)

“Bukowski may pridefully carry the air of confidence in himself and his writing but Van Sciver’s artwork always reminds us of just how rickety and unbalanced Bukowski’s life really is. ...Van Sciver knows who Bukowski is but he also knows that in Bukowski, like hopefully in all of us, there is the potential for change and growth.” (Scott Cederlund - Panel Patter)

“...Fante Bukowski... continues its author’s tradition of delivering caustic satire while still maintaining a degree of empathy for its flawed characters. ... Along the way, Van Sciver skewers artistic delusionand the commercial imperative, demonstrating that the ostensibly highbrow world of literature is as full of self-interested hustlers as every other muddy ditch where people see the promise of fame and riches on the other side.” (Tom Murphy - Broken Frontier)

Definitely one of the best comics of the year.
By Katherine A. Rhoades
Van Sciver is really establishing himself as the voice of a generation with his recent work. This comic pokes fun at the old American trope of the tortured white male genius unappreciated by the philistine masses, but at the same time the reader begins to feel for the protagonist in all his ridiculousness. The story is like A Confederacy of Dunces, but funnier, better, and with amazing drawings. Someone give Noah Van Sciver a Pulitzer already! Can't wait for the next installment, and I would give more than five stars if I could.
