About the Author
I created Dev and Ollie following a 'light bulb' moment at a festival in Watford, England.
Indian by origin and having grown up in Japan, I now live in England with my family. My upbringing has been that of a global citizen. And after having children, I am keen for my children to be global citizens while also to be proud of their own culture and heritage.
As a mother of two young children and a British Indian, I'm forever exploring ways to impart cultural knowledge to them. Also, my children are avid readers and adding variety to their bookshelf is something I actively work on.
My mission is for children not just to be reading well, but to be well read. Realising that this can be easily achieved if children can relate to the characters in a book, Dev and Ollie were created – Dev, a cheeky, curious and sometimes clumsy boy and Ollie his magical bedtime cuddly owl.
What sparked their conception was an Indian cultural festival experience in England. Festivals evoke the best of any culture! Colour, noise, excitement, family, laughter – all are perfect ingredients for children's stories with a universal appeal.
During my time in India from 1995 to 1999 for my undergraduate degree in computer science, I traveled extensively within India. That's when I experienced an array of amazing festivals.
Kite Crazy is about one such experience. One of my most cherished memories is the annual kite festival in Gujarat, India...flying kites on the rooftop with cousins from dawn till dusk. Food, drinks, piles of kites, everything would be planned for. We'd fight to have a go (because we had fewer kites remaining than the number of cousins!). Then seconds later, we'd be ganging up and competing against others on neighbouring roof terraces.
I'm working on many more Dev and Ollie books to be released soon, not just about festivals in India, but unique festivals around the world that haven't been discovered on an international level...festivals that children will love to read about! In fact, I've had tremendous fun researching such festivals, so much so that my bucket list now includes some of them (Tomatina Festival in Spain and Snow & Ice Festival in China)!

FIVE GOLDEN KITES
By Amazon Customer
Dev and Ollie: Kite Crazy
Author: SHWETA AGGARWAL
Illustrated by: SOMNATH CHATTERJEE
Sometimes the simplest birthday present is the best. Some children want video games and other expensive toys but Dev was thrilled with his present: A KITE! Dev just want to learn how to fly his kite and when his Grandpa enters his room at bedtime that’s all he wants. But, children can be impatient as you know and of course Dev was disappointed when his Grandpa told him to wait until the morning. But, Dev was almost asleep when his precious and favorite cuddly toy Ollie came to life and took him on a journey he would never forget. The pictures are amazing and bring the story to life as he finds himself at the Gujarat Kite Festival in India. But, unfortunately his landing since he was using his toy as his plane crashed on top of another child’s kite. Rahul was the name of the child and he offered to bring him another one. But, poor Dev broke more than one.
Searching the marketplace he came across an old man’s shop who sold kites. From this point on parents and teachers can use this book to show how Dev understands his responsibility to replace something that he broke and he uses his manners to deal with adults that he just meets. The older man’s store is in the Patang Bazaar and it is filled with clutter and needs to be cleaned up. In order to find the right kites and replace the ones he broke Dev readily accepts the responsibility of helping the man rearrange his store. He worked hard and his toy Ollie was proud of him and wished that he would do the same to his own room. But, Dev’s response is cute and will made you smile. Over anxious he does not see the ladder and what happens next will teach Dev and other children about being careful and safety. Putting the finishing touches on the store wait until you see what he uncovers about this man. You will be amazed. But, he returns to Rahul and gives him the special kites the man gave him. Thanking him for his kindness and efforts will he learn to fly a kite and enter a kite contest before returning home? Wait until you see what they show him and how you can learn from this story and from Rahul’s father the ART OF FLYING A KITE!
This story has humor and is fun filled for children up to age 9. Watch Dev as he takes lessons in kite flying and tries to learn the art of winning a contest. See his face when he and his cuddly OWL friend Ollie return home. Will he land safely this time? Will he have a kite to fly? What happens when he challenges his grandfather to a kite contest? Watch and see what happens? Who wins the contest? What does that teach you about Dev? What happens when Ollie suggests that he cleans his room?
Dev and Ollie ; Kite Crazy even has Facts for Curious Minds at the end that those interested in learning more about kites will benefit from. Would you like a Kite for a birthday present? I wonder what Dev would like next year?
Check out the colorful illustration on the last page and see how many times you find Ollie. A story that will make you smile and realize that children can be polite and responsible.

Great Book for Kids
By Viddhi
Dev & Ollie – Kite Crazy written by Shweta Aggarwal and illustrated by Somnath Chatterjee is a book perfect for kids aged 4+. Dev is a cheeky, clumsy and of course a curious boy and Ollie is Dev’s magical cuddly toy who comes alive only in the night and they together take off on adventures. Interesting huh?
Dev unwraps his birthday presents and finds a cool new kite. But there is a problem, he doesn’t know how to fly it. His grandpa promises to teach him the next day. But he doesn’t want to wait till then. So he together with Ollie decides to go on an adventure and learn to fly a kite? So where do they go? They go to one of the largest kite festivals in the world. You might all have guessed it by now. It’s Gujarat. :-) So to know what do they do there and how do they learn to fly a kite and did they learn Kai Po Che, you need to read the book. :-)
What we liked about the book,
1) Bright and colorful illustrations. The front cover reminded me of Harry Potter riding in buck beak.
2) The story starts with a small introduction to all the characters in the story.
3) Along with the story they teach the traditions of India and also the landscapes and important places.
4) At the end of the story they have the facts page which gives more information about the topic they discussed in the story.
5) The small game in the end is fun for curious minds.
It’s altogether a great book and kids will love it for sure.
