History's People: Personalities and the Past (CBC Massey Lectures), by Margaret MacMillan

In History’s People internationally acclaimed historian Margaret MacMillan gives her own personal selection of figures of the past, women and men, some famous and some little-known, who stand out for her. Some have changed the course of history and even directed the currents of their times. Others are memorable for being risk-takers, adventurers, or observers. She looks at the concept of leadership through Bismarck and the unification of Germany; William Lyon MacKenzie King and the preservation of the Canadian Federation; Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the bringing of a unified United States into the Second World War. She also notes how leaders can make huge and often destructive mistakes, as in the cases of Hitler, Stalin, and Thatcher. Richard Nixon and Samuel de Champlain are examples of daring risk-takers who stubbornly went their own ways, often in defiance of their own societies. Then there are the dreamers, explorers, and adventurers, individuals like Fanny Parkes and Elizabeth Simcoe who manage to defy or ignore the constraints of their own societies. Finally, there are the observers, such as Babur, the first Mughal emperor of India, and Victor Klemperer, a Holocaust survivor, who kept the notes and diaries that bring the past to life.

Review
"MacMillan deftly and engagingly shows that history is a process of capturing the minutiae of life as much as time’s epic strokes." -- Publishers Weekly, Starred Review.

"A concise, educational overview of some of the men and women who have carved out spots in the annals of history and why they should be remembered. Fans of the author are in for another treat." -- Kirkus

"Avoiding arid timelines, MacMillan, an Oxford professor, instead provides intimate human encounters. She seems to love sifting through the revealing details. 'I want to gossip,' she confesses — and so do we." -- The New York Times

A Delicious Invitation to the Study of History
By Peter Mendrela
“If history is…a feast”, as Margaret MacMillan puts it, “the savour comes from its people”. Indeed, MacMillan’s “People” should be a required “dish” for anyone interested in the study of history not only because of the fascinating personalities she discusses, but because of the way she does it.

In short, her writing is lucid, engaging, and scholarly without being elitist or conceding. Much ink has been spilt discussing Bismarck, FDR, Hitler, Stalin or Thatcher, but rarely has reading about them been so much…fun (this adjective, of course, is not a judgment of their actions). Moreover, apart from these historical giants which she categorizes by their personality traits, Macmillan adds a wonderful homage to the less know figures in Canadian history, intrepid women explorers, and a concluding tribute to select diary keepers who make the study of history not only more interesting, but often possible.

One final note. No, MacMillan does not deny the importance of larger political, economic, or social forces which, as it were, “make” history, but she suggests that it is the specific personalities of the aforementioned people that resulted in their seizing power and inflicting such powerful historical shifts we live (and grapple with) even today.

This is history par excellence from an excellent historian and a writer.

Chatty, Accessible and Captivating
By George Poirier
This book’s focus is on various people from history – mostly of the past couple of centuries but some from much earlier. The book has five chapters, each of which centers on a particular human characteristic. The lives of some key people in history who have demonstrated this particular trait are examined – some quite extensively while others rather briefly. The people that are discussed include politicians, explorers, monarchs, dictators as well as others; many are ordinary people who have made a difference in the world or who have simply left a useful written record of parts of their lives and times.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, I did find one sentence to be rather misleading at best. The author states (page 3) “If Albert Einstein had not grasped the nature of the atom early in the twentieth century, could the allies have developed the atomic bomb during the Second World War?” As far as I know, Einstein did not decipher any properties of the atom that could have led to the atomic bomb. That was the work mainly of Rutherford and Bohr and, later, Hahn, Strassman, Meitner, Frisch, Fermi and others. Einstein’s early twentieth century work focused on space and time (relativity), Brownian motion, mass-energy equivalence and the photoelectric effect; nothing about atomic structure or nuclear energy or anything that could have led to the atomic bomb.

As indicated, the author’s prose is very chatty, friendly and accessible. It appears to have been written for the interested general reader and so is without the usual jargon that one often finds in more formal works. This book should be of interest to those who have anywhere from a casual to a passionate interest in history and want to read about some of its people – well-known and lesser-known - through a relaxed and friendly prose.

An exceptional read.
By Cloggie Downunder
“Our understanding and enjoyment of the past would be impoverished without its individuals, even though we know history’s currents – its underlying forces and shifts, whether of technology or political structures or social values – must never be ignored”

History’s People: Personalities and the Past is the eleventh book by Canadian author and historian, Margaret MacMillan, and comprises the 2015 Massey Lectures. As well as a general commentary on the people that make and record history, MacMillan focusses on certain individuals, examining their role in history. Readers may be intrigued to find that MacMillan groups together Woodrow Wilson, Margaret Thatcher, Stalin and Hitler under a common banner, analysing their leadership successes and failures.

MacMillan looks at people who took advantage of favourable circumstances, people who made their own beneficial circumstances, people with a knack for judging when the time was right, people who achieved by virtue of believing in themselves and their cause, and people who recorded events around them. Leaders, pioneers, explorers, entrepreneurs and meticulous diarists all feature.

MacMillan tells us: “…we should never forget that the people of the past were as human as we are….we recognize in the people of the past familiar characteristics; they too had ambitions and fears, loves and hates…” and also that “Women have been some of the great adventurers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, perhaps because they were tempered and toughened by overcoming the obstacles society placed in the way of their sex”

In her final chapter, we are told: “It is the interplay between individuals and their worlds that makes history and brings it to life for those of us in the present”. People who have an interest in modern history will enjoy this outstanding and very comprehensive collection of lectures. MacMillan includes a 17-page index and, for readers whose interest is piqued by a particular character, an 18-page section on sources and further reading. An exceptional read.

The Promise of Integrated Multicultural and Bilingual Education: Inclusive Palestinian-Arab and Jewish Schools in Israel, by Zvi Bekerman

The Promise of Integrated and Multicultural Bilingual Education presents the results of a long-term ethnographic study of the integrated bilingual Palestinian-Jewish schools in Israel that offer a new educational option to two groups of Israelis--Palestinians and Jews--who have been in conflict for the last one hundred years. Their goal is to create egalitarian bilingual multicultural environments to facilitate the growth of youth who can acknowledge and respect "others" while maintaining loyalty to their respective cultural traditions. In this book, Bekerman reveals the complex school practices implemented while negotiating identity and culture in contexts of enduring conflict. Data gathered from interviews with teachers, students, parents, and state officials are presented and analyzed to explore the potential and limitations of peace education given the cultural resources, ethnic-religious affiliations, political beliefs, and historical narratives of the various interactants. The book concludes with critique of Western positivist paradigmatic perspectives that currently guide peace education, maintaining that one of the primary weaknesses of current bilingual and multicultural approaches to peace education is their failure to account for the primacy of the political framework of the nation state and the psychologized educational perspectives that guide their educational work. Change, it is argued, will only occur after these perspectives are abandoned, which entails critically reviewing present understandings of the individual, of identity and culture, and of the learning process.

"Even more valuable than its widely praised predecessor, The Culture of Narcissism." ―John W. Aldridge

Faced with an escalating arms race, rising crime and terrorism, environmental deterioration, and long-term economic decline, people have retreated from commitments that presuppose a secure and orderly world. In his latest book, Christopher Lasch, the renowned historian and social critic, powerfully argues that self-concern, so characteristic of our time, has become a search for psychic survival.

A Genuinely Great Mind
By A Customer
Lasch has a great intellect: he's read deeply and though he's strong-minded, he's also compassionate. Here he examines faulty ideas, often finding the grain of truth that's given them wing. In THE MINIMAL SELF, still deeply relevant to our times, he explains two urges in light of man's destructiveness and our lack of faith in a future: a regressive, narcissistic wish to merge with the environment, in a timeless solipsism that negates the past and the present; or else, a strict adherence to rules and regulations that demand obedience by threat of punishment and retribution, and which harken back to false nostalgia for a simpler past.
Lasch shows us that it's much more complicated than that: that our obsession with survival, our lack of faith in language to communicate commonalities (and its exploitation not just by the media but by activists trying to counter the media's insidious influence), and our confusion about how to structure, or de-structure (destroy) our lives leads us back to Freud, back to humility, and back to separation, away from narcissistic fantasies of either merger or omnipotence.
In brilliant, thoughtful, complex prose, Lasch argues for an enlightened dependence, a reliance on the cultural sphere to give meaning to our inner drives and our recognition of the objective outside world, and thoughtfulness and sobriety in place of infantilism and fantasy. Lasch argues for mature play, and his is a convincing argument.

The Minimal Self
By M. McKasson Morgan
The book is disturbing and insightful. Though written in the 80s, this social/psychological/political/aesthetic critique describes today's disconnect between self and society: the lack of humanisitic glue; the sad (and secret) nihilism of religions that can no longer keep the genie of destruction corked up; the merging of mass culture with mass destruction. Just as it must've been two decades ago, the book is an amazing wake up call. My copy, however, was in poor shape. The binding is upside down and the pages are falling out.

Toward A Psychology of Non-Being
By Phyllis Antebi Ph.D
For anyone familiar with Abraham Maslow's classic, "Toward a Psychology of Being", my title will seem particularly relevant. While Maslow was interested in studying self-actualized and self-actualizing people, Lash tells us about minimally actualized people. Lasch tells us that as a culture, we have become infantile, childish adults who won't grow up! He suggests that a paradigm shift away from our merger fantasies could help us to individuate more as moral agents and less as consumers of mass culture. Individuation and radical self awareness are not new themes, but in this book the concepts are conceptually abstract. Many readers may find Lasch's argument particularly difficult to follow. He uses language that is quite technical and specialized.
Maslow's thesis is far more accessible to the interested reader. Both authors address our needs for status, security and love. The message in Lash's, "The Minimal Self", is far less optimistic than the message from Maslow. Reaching our full potential is quite unlikely in a culture consumed by materialistic sources of gratification. Lash's message is that personal accountability is not synonymous with utilitarian morality. Utilitarian morality tells us that the ends justify the means, any means. It's the goal oriented style minus consideration for or of others. Implicit in Lasch's book, , is the belief that secular societies breed discontent.
Actually, Lasch''s message, put simply, is that we are becoming more and more a culture which breeds and fosters narcissistic psychopathology. However correct, as a theme, this idea is not that new. While I agree with the message, the vehicle itself is difficult to get through. I am,therefore, recommending two other books on the topic of narcissism. The firsts published in 2007, is written by Paul Smith. It is titled: "Primitive America:The Ideology of Capitalist Democracy". The second recommendation, written in 2009, is titled:"The Narcissism Epidemic:Living in an Age of Entitlement". The authors are Twenge and Campbell. The subjects of all three books, including "The Minimal Self", overlap. It might prove interesting to compare and contrast the similarities and differences of these various authors. Also consider two Frontline reports I recently watched on PBS. The first, "Consumed". The second, "Generation Like".

Professing Selves: Transsexuality and Same-Sex Desire in Contemporary Iran (Experimental Futures), by Afsaneh Najmabadi

Since the mid-1980s, the Islamic Republic of Iran has permitted, and partially subsidized, sex reassignment surgery. In Professing Selves, Afsaneh Najmabadi explores the meaning of transsexuality in contemporary Iran. Combining historical and ethnographic research, she describes how, in the postrevolutionary era, the domains of law, psychology and psychiatry, Islamic jurisprudence, and biomedicine became invested in distinguishing between the acceptable "true" transsexual and other categories of identification, notably the "true" homosexual, an unacceptable category of existence in Iran. Najmabadi argues that this collaboration among medical authorities, specialized clerics, and state officials—which made transsexuality a legally tolerated, if not exactly celebrated, category of being—grew out of Iran's particular experience of Islamicized modernity. Paradoxically, state regulation has produced new spaces for non-normative living in Iran, since determining who is genuinely "trans" depends largely on the stories that people choose to tell, on the selves that they profess.

Review
"Professing Selves is one of the best recent works on contemporary Iran. Arguing that transsexuals' legal and psychiatric negotiations reveal more general processes of proceduralism, negotiation of legal categories, and state formation, Afsaneh Najmabadi challenges the lumping of transsexuals and homosexuals as identical human rights issues, and argues that poorly targeted universalistic campaigns can damage the conditions of life for the people they are intended to help. She works refreshingly at the level of real lives, jurists, and psychiatrists."—Michael M. J. Fischer, author of Mute Dreams, Blind Owls, and Dispersed Knowledges: Persian Poesis in the Transnational Circuitry

"In this important, timely, and erudite work, Afsaneh Najmabadi brings her nuanced understanding of multiple discourses and institutions in Iran to bear on the recent and remarkable visibility of transsexuality in that country. Professing Selves is likely to have a wide-ranging appeal—to historians, Middle East specialists, sexuality and gender scholars, and social scientists interested in issues of state formation and biopolitics. It will be the definitive text on its topic for a long time to come."—Susan Stryker, author of Transgender History

"In her theoretically sophisticated book, historian Najmabadi investigates the political and cultural evolution of Iranian attitudes toward 'sexual deviancy and sexual disorder,' beginning in the 1930s. . . .Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above." (A. Rassam Choice)

"A fascinating book that... challenges the Western media’s depiction of transsexuality and sex reassignment surgery as coercive while ignoring the vibrant reform movement and history of progressive activism in Iran." (Nancy Gallagher Middle East Media and Book Reviews Online)

“Under guise of an ethnography of transsexuality in contemporary Iran, Afsaneh Najmabadi has written a nuanced ethnography of the transition of the Iranian state and public sphere from one type (jins) to another. Building on Joan Scott’s (1986) observation that gender is a useful category for historical analysis, Najmabadi goes beyond showing that sex and sexuality are also useful categories for historical analysis to suggest that somatic-constitutional transformation can be as well. … Najmabadi is an excellent guide through this world of nonconforming confirmers of the core gender categories of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”  (Leila Hudson TSQ)

“Here we find that nuanced and adept reading of power, subjectivity, submission, and subversion—this time of lived, contemporary cultural practices—that we have grown to expect from a scholar of her caliber.” (Roshanak Kheshti GLQ)

“ Afsaneh Najmabadi’s new book Professing Selves is a great start to understanding how gender and sexuality work within Iran. It makes the point that geography, history, culture, and on-going macro- and microsocial processes are crucial to understanding transsexuality and same-sex desire…. This is a work that speaks to the historical and cultural relativity of social meanings and practices—the importance of the local and specific.” (Darryl B. Hill Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences)

Donald E. Westlake is one of the greats of crime fiction. Under the pseudonym Richard Stark, he wrote twenty-four fast-paced, hardboiled novels featuring Parker, a shrewd career criminal with a talent for heists. Using the same nom de plume, Westlake also completed a separate series in the Parker universe, starring Alan Grofield, an occasional colleague of Parker. While he shares events and characters with several Parker novels, Grofield is less calculating and more hot-blooded than Parker; think fewer guns, more dames.

Not that there isn’t violence and adventure aplenty. The third Grofield novel, The Blackbird shares its first chapter with Slayground: after a traumatic car crash, Parker eludes the police, but Grofield gets caught. Lying injured in the hospital, Grofield is visited by G-Men who offer him an alternative to jail, and he finds himself forced into a deadly situation involving international criminals and a political conspiracy.

With a new foreword by Sarah Weinman that situates the Grofield series within Westlake’s work as a whole, this novel is an exciting addition to any crime fiction fan’s library.

Grofield, Alan Grofield - Shaken Not Stirred
By Dirk Drudgler
"The Blackbird" continues Richard Stark's (AKA Donald Westlake) desire to spread out the genre umbrella a little bit without fundamentally changing his main meal ticket, Parker. Instead he uses the adventures of easy going and likable Alan Grofield to move the Parker-verse in some different directions. In the previous Grofield book, "The Dame," Grofield becomes wrapped up in a classic, locked door parlor mystery, a la Agatha Christie. In "The Damsel" Grofield lives out a rousing action romance. In this one, published in the late 60's, he channels Ian Fleming and sees how Grofield stacks up against James Bond.

As with all the Parker books, we encounter characters we have met before giving Stark new ways to build up these minor characters. After a botched armored car robbery (also chronicled in Slayground which was written first but published later), Grofield is captured and involuntarily put to work by a super secret arm of the government in exchange for his freedom. Grofield would much rather escape, but is unable to do so under the thumb of relentless secret agents. Why is Grofield the man for the job? Simple. He has a close relationship with several of the subjects of interest, all of whom we know from previous Grofield stories.

Without giving too much of the plot away, Grofield becomes involved in a classic Bondian adventure with all the accompanying danger, hot chicks and world-wide disaster implications. The story is far more like Bond cinema than Bond books. Unlike Bond who always worked for Queen and Country, Grofield is only looking out for himself. As his involvement in the international plot becomes more tangled the two motivations, country and self, intersect.

There is a substantial maturing of Grofield in this novel, especially from when we first meet him in "The Score." Although he remains his charismatic self throughout the novel, he does several very cold things which would force even Parker (and Bond) to raise an eyebrow. The novel is fast paced and a very quick read. I haven't found a Parker-verse book I haven't liked yet (I'm reading through them chronologically) and this one though radically different from what I've come to expect, is still a great read.

Entertaining
By C. White
It seems almost anything Donald Westlake writes is a pure joy to read. This one was no exception.
In fact, I've even re-read some of his novels several times when I gave up in getting another good
author. Not only is a good man hard to find, so is an author.

Grofield does Bond, Westlake blows Stark's cover
By Christopher (o.d.c.)
Publication date: 1969

Chapter one of The Blackbird is similar to chapter one of Slayground: A Parker Novel (Parker Novels)- the same heist told from Grofield's point-of-view. Grofield is a professional, but he is not like Parker, as soon becomes apparent:

"You've got a small army here, you don't need me. What your problem is, you don't want the rest of the team to know one of their number's been bumped off. You get little morale problems like that often?"
"I hope you screw up, Grofield," Ken said. "I hope you screw up so bad I get the order to take you right back and turn you in for that armored car job."
"And let the Third World capture Peoria? Move over, Ken, I'm off to save my country from the pygmies."
Ken moved over. "You cynical b*stard," he said.
Grofield stopped with his hand on the knob. "If I don't come back from this mission," he said dramatically, "I want you to tell the folks back home. Tell them to be on their guard. Tell them to--tell them to--watch the skies!" He went out chuckling, and Ken slammed the door behind him.

This Richard Stark is not in the 'quartet' form- there is no shift in the middle to other points of view. It is a very creditable parody or pastiche of a Bond adventure, with a stark twist in one chapter (nobody does it better), and Westlake's dry humor on display quite often. He seems willing in this outting to blow 'Stark's' cover:

... He sat up, stiff and aching and bruised all over. He called, "Vivian?"
Somebody groaned. He got to hands and knees.
"Groan again," he called.
She groaned again. He crawled in that direction, and touched wet cloth. He slid his hand along the cloth and said, "Vivian?"
A weak voice said, "Watch that hand, there."
"Why? What have I got?"
"So far, leg."
He patted it. "You sound like you're all right," he said.

Untamed: A Desert Island Erotic Romance, by Fannie Tucker

When career woman Kim wakes up on a deserted stretch of beach, she remembers little of the mysterious rescuer who pulled her from the sea. She follows his footprints along the shore and discovers that she's stranded on a desert island.

Stripped of the power and security she once took for granted, Kim finds herself at the mercy of a castaway named Pete, a ruggedly handsome man with a past shrouded in secrets. Pete promises to help her escape the island, but not until he's taught Kim a thing or two.

Soon, a monstrous typhoon threatens the island, and Kim is forced to make a choice. Will she return to her lucrative career and all its trappings, or has she been seduced by life in the wild?

This story contains multiple steamy sex scenes and a whirlwind romance that quickly escalates to a typhoon! 14000 words.

Excerpt:

The water enveloped her up to the waist, cool and comfortable. Kim dipped down until her head disappeared below the surface. The salt of the ocean seemed to vanish, and she emerged feeling clean. Thirsty, she waded to the waterfall and let it pour over her head. Eyes closed, she tilted her head back and let the water rush into her mouth, cold and pure and delicious. She gulped greedily as it streamed over her lips and roll down her fair skin into the low neckline of her dress. It felt so good, so relaxing, and for the moment, Kim didn't want to go back to Los Angeles. She didn't care about Eastern Capital or her career. All she wanted was fresh clean water beneath a jungle canopy.

"Tell me what you feel," Pete said. His voice was close, and she knew he was in the water with her, close enough to be heard over the waterfall.

"Cold and hungry," she said.

"No," he said. "That's your mind getting in the way. Tell me what your body feels."

"What do you mean?" she asked, speaking loudly to be heard over the rushing water that cascaded over her head.

"Don't think about what you want or need. Just listen to what your body is telling you, and describe it."

Kim tried to shut out her racing thoughts. Since she'd awoken, she had been worrying about what would happen to her. Now she simply concentrated on sensation. "The water rushing over my forehead is cold," she said. "It makes my skin feel tight and firm, and I'm covered in goose bumps."

In her mind, Kim followed the course of that water as it flowed down her neck and chest. She gasped. "My nipples are hard from the cold, but the water rolling past them feels good." Her breath caught in her throat, and she blushed. "It's making me kind of horny!"

"Now tell me again. How do you feel?" he said. His voice held an eager edge.

Kim remembered her earlier answer. Cold and hungry? No... "I feel alive!" she cried, laughing.

She remembered the twinkle in Pete's eye before, the look of a man with a secret. She was starting to suspect she knew what that secret was. When he put his hands around her waist, Kim wasn't surprised at all.

"I've done something for you," he said softly. "Now it's your turn."

Kim stepped out from beneath the waterfall and opened her eyes. Pete stood waist deep in front of her. He'd taken a dip himself, and his long wavy hair lay slicked back against his skull. She could see that beneath his unkempt hair, he was a very handsome man. She raised her face to his, and Pete kissed her with the same half-remembered tenderness of the night before. Beneath the beard, his lips were soft and gentle, and his tongue probed softly into her mouth. She met it with her own, and his hunger fed her own desire.

Pete stepped closer, and Kim realized he had discarded his khaki shorts. He was naked beneath the water.
