Najmabadi argues that this collaboration among medical authorities, specialized clerics, and state officials—which made transsexuality a legally tolerated, if not exactly celebrated, category of being—grew out of Iran's particular experience of Islamicized modernity. Paradoxically, state regulation has produced new spaces for non-normative living in Iran, since determining who is genuinely "trans" depends largely on the stories that people choose to tell, on the selves that they profess.

Afsaneh Najmabadi is the Francis Lee Higginson Professor of History and Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard University. She is the author of Women with Mustaches and Men without Beards: Gender and Sexual Anxieties of Iranian Modernity and The Story of the Daughters of Quchan: Gender and National Memory in Iranian History. She is a coeditor (with Kathryn Babayan) of Islamicate Sexualities: Translations across Temporal Geographies of Desire.

Donald E. Westlake is one of the greats of crime fiction. Under the pseudonym Richard Stark, he wrote twenty-four fast-paced, hardboiled novels featuring Parker, a shrewd career criminal with a talent for heists. The third Grofield novel, The Blackbird shares its first chapter with Slayground: after a traumatic car crash, Parker eludes the police, but Grofield gets caught. Lying injured in the hospital, Grofield is visited by G-Men who offer him an alternative to jail, and he finds himself forced into a deadly situation involving international criminals and a political conspiracy.

With a new foreword by Sarah Weinman that situates the Grofield series within Westlake’s work as a whole, this novel is an exciting addition to any crime fiction fan’s library.

Grofield, Alan Grofield - Shaken Not Stirred

"The Blackbird" continues Richard Stark's (AKA Donald Westlake) desire to spread out the genre umbrella a little bit without fundamentally changing his main meal ticket, Parker. Instead he uses the adventures of easy going and likable Alan Grofield to move the Parker-verse in some different directions. In the previous Grofield book, "The Dame," Grofield becomes wrapped up in a classic, locked door parlor mystery, a la Agatha Christie. In "The Damsel" Grofield lives out a rousing action romance. In this one, published in the late 60's, he channels Ian Fleming and sees how Grofield stacks up against James Bond.

As with all the Parker books, we encounter characters we have met before giving Stark new ways to build up these minor characters. After a botched armored car robbery (also chronicled in Slayground which was written first but published later), Grofield is captured and involuntarily put to work by a super secret arm of the government in exchange for his freedom. Grofield would much rather escape, but is unable to do so under the thumb of relentless secret agents. Why is Grofield the man for the job? Simple. He has a close relationship with several of the subjects of interest, all of whom we know from previous Grofield stories.

Without giving too much of the plot away, Grofield becomes involved in a classic Bondian adventure with all the accompanying danger, hot chicks and world-wide disaster implications. The story is far more like Bond cinema than Bond books. Unlike Bond who always worked for Queen and Country, Grofield is only looking out for himself. As his involvement in the international plot becomes more tangled the two motivations, country and self, intersect.

There is a substantial maturing of Grofield in this novel, especially from when we first meet him in "The Score." Although he remains his charismatic self throughout the novel, he does several very cold things which would force even Parker (and Bond) to raise an eyebrow. The novel is fast paced and a very quick read. I haven't found a Parker-verse book I haven't liked yet (I'm reading through them chronologically) and this one though radically different from what I've come to expect, is still a great read.

It seems almost anything Donald Westlake writes is a pure joy to read. This one was no exception.
In fact, I've even re-read some of his novels several times when I gave up in getting another good
author. Not only is a good man hard to find, so is an author.

Grofield does Bond, Westlake blows Stark's cover

Chapter one of The Blackbird is similar to chapter one of Slayground: A Parker Novel (Parker Novels)- the same heist told from Grofield's point-of-view. Grofield is a professional, but he is not like Parker, as soon becomes apparent:

"You've got a small army here, you don't need me. What your problem is, you don't want the rest of the team to know one of their number's been bumped off. You get little morale problems like that often?"
"I hope you screw up, Grofield," Ken said. "I hope you screw up so bad I get the order to take you right back and turn you in for that armored car job."
"And let the Third World capture Peoria? Move over, Ken, I'm off to save my country from the pygmies."
Ken moved over. "You cynical b*stard," he said.
Grofield stopped with his hand on the knob. "If I don't come back from this mission," he said dramatically, "I want you to tell the folks back home. Tell them to be on their guard. Tell them to--tell them to--watch the skies!" He went out chuckling, and Ken slammed the door behind him.

This Richard Stark is not in the 'quartet' form- there is no shift in the middle to other points of view. It is a very creditable parody or pastiche of a Bond adventure, with a stark twist in one chapter (nobody does it better), and Westlake's dry humor on display quite often. He seems willing in this outting to blow 'Stark's' cover:

Somebody groaned. He got to hands and knees.
"Groan again," he called.
She groaned again. He crawled in that direction, and touched wet cloth. He slid his hand along the cloth and said, "Vivian?"

"So far, leg."
He patted it. "You sound like you're all right," he said.

"What do you mean?" she asked, speaking loudly to be heard over the rushing water that cascaded over her head.

"Don't think about what you want or need. Just listen to what your body is telling you, and describe it."

Kim tried to shut out her racing thoughts. Since she'd awoken, she had been worrying about what would happen to her. Now she simply concentrated on sensation. "The water rushing over my forehead is cold," she said. "It makes my skin feel tight and firm, and I'm covered in goose bumps."

In her mind, Kim followed the course of that water as it flowed down her neck and chest. She gasped. "My nipples are hard from the cold, but the water rolling past them feels good." Her breath caught in her throat, and she blushed. "It's making me kind of horny!"

"Now tell me again. How do you feel?" he said. His voice held an eager edge.

Kim remembered her earlier answer. Cold and hungry? No... "I feel alive!" she cried, laughing.

She remembered the twinkle in Pete's eye before, the look of a man with a secret. She was starting to suspect she knew what that secret was. When he put his hands around her waist, Kim wasn't surprised at all.

"I've done something for you," he said softly. "Now it's your turn."

Kim stepped out from beneath the waterfall and opened her eyes. Pete stood waist deep in front of her. He'd taken a dip himself, and his long wavy hair lay slicked back against his skull. She could see that beneath his unkempt hair, he was a very handsome man. She raised her face to his, and Pete kissed her with the same half-remembered tenderness of the night before. Beneath the beard, his lips were soft and gentle, and his tongue probed softly into her mouth. She met it with her own, and his hunger fed her own desire.

Pete stepped closer, and Kim realized he had discarded his khaki shorts. He was naked beneath the water.

Kim wrapped her arms around him and felt the hard, lean muscle of his shoulders, then raked her fingers down along his slim back, and further still, over the hard curve of his naked buttocks.

Pietro Bembo (1470-1547), scholar and critic, was one of the most admired Latinists of his day. After some years at the court of Urbino, where he exchanged Platonic love letters with Lucrezia Borgia, he moved to Rome and served as secretary to Leo X (1513-1520). Later he retired to Padua and a life of letters. He was made a cardinal in 1539. The poems in this volume come from all periods of his life and reflect both his erudition and his wide-ranging friendships. This verse edition is the first time they have been translated into English.

This volume also includes the prose dialogue Etna, an account of Bembo's ascent of Mt. Etna in Sicily during his student days, translated by Betty Radice.

A cleric, a Humanist, and erotic poet

It is always a treat to read treatises by clerics of the Middle Ages through the later Renaissance that enlarge upon the extent of the scientific understanding of their era. Bembo's ETNA gives us a clear exposition of how 16th century men viewed volcanology. It is also interesting to note how a cleric who is also a Humanist, reconciles his privates beliefs with the authorized doctrine of the Church. Bembo considered the membrane between classical mythology and the Christian religion to be readily and easily permeable. Hence his exquisite lyric eroticism.

His Faunus character was a creature after his own heart, a seeker after beauty, the unsatisfied voyeur, Faunus the lascivious lover of fleeing nymphs, witty, self-mocking, an earnest Casanova. His Faunus is one who knows the power a lovely woman can have over a man who understands the tender art of making love. I found his Faunus poems and PRIAPUS fine reading.

This offering from Harvard's I Tatti series presents us with a quite thorough biography of Bembo, and also takes us through his studies, and gives us a very good background on his fellow literary companions and friends. His life, in and out of the church, is indicative of so many of the other young men who fell back on the benefices of the church without a vocation, but simply to underwrite their lifestyle.

Pretty decent

I must be clear that this book is ONLY to keep your brain limber or have something to do in the office when you have a few freee minutes, since the questions don't really have much to do with what is on a Wechsler test. In fact, having just taken the Wechsler test (III), the only thing that seems to have a resemblance to this is the vocabulary section.

Other than that, I'd say that you can't go wrong with this book because of the low price of a second hand edition ($0.01) and you get the feeling of actually holding the book IN YOUR HANDS and not flipping back and forth through a Kindle trying to stumble on "location numbers."

The variety of exercises is not as complete as the Philip Carter books (either of them) Ultimate IQ Tests: The Biggest Ever IQ Test Book (Ultimate Series) or IQ and Psychometric Test Workbook: Essential Preparation for Verbal, Numerical and Spatial Aptitude Tests and Personality Tests (Testing Series).

Verdict: Worth the price ($0.01 plus shipping).

A fun book filled with quizzes that cove many areas. Some are very easy, others you have to think about for a while. It reminds me I lot of the GRE book that I had when studying for my grad school entrance exam. Definitely worth the time and price, you always learn something new.

Not worth it!

For $6 more you can purchase the complete book of Gut on kindle. This summary was definitely not worth the money I paid for it. The analysis of the key takeaways are extremely vague. It has NO illustrations which seem to be an important part of the complete version, especially since they were created by Ender's sister who is a specialized medical graphic designer. I purchased this summary because of the positive reviews but I should've made the decision based on the number of pages, clearly not enough for a worthy analysis.

~~ A "gutsy" book! ~~

Are you curious about what happens from ingestion to digestion? The two page overview at the beginning of this detailed summary by Eureka informs you what the full book covers including how recent studies "suggest the gut might have a broader impact on the body and brain...." than many folks originally thought. It even goes as far as to suggest that the gut is like a second brain i.e. the health of your gut is VERY important.

We get to read seven short bios on the important people in this book before heading into the 'Key Takeaways'. There are eight of these which are listed first and then discussed in more detail one by one. Key Takeaway 2 talks about how the "digestive and neurological systems are tightly interconnected". Key Takeaway 4 briefly explores the connection between a healthy gut and immune system. In Key Takeaway 7 the discussion is on the effect the choices of C-section and formula feeding have on the gut and building of a healthy gut microbiome in children. What can be done to counter this?

So, is the original book all serious reading? No, there are "many jokes built in" throughout the discussion of a complicated topic. The original is also well illustrated.

Intriguing Summary on Health

This summary and analysis of "Gut" by Enders was a very thought-provoking read. As soon as I read the first page, I couldn't wait to learn more about the author's discoveries. I knew that healthy eating affected our physical health, but I had never considered its impact on our emotions and behaviors. This selection summarizes what the overall book is about, lists key takeaways and then analyzes those takeaways with further explanation. The information and research shared in the summary are very compelling. I found takeaway 5's discussion on disease prevention through symbiotic relationships to be particularly interesting. I loved that I was able to gain so much knowledge on this subject without having to read the entire book.
