Richard Thorpe is Professor of Management Development and Pro Dean for Research at Leeds University Business School. His research interests have included: performance, entrepreneurship, knowledge and leadership as well as research methods in management research.� His early career as a management trainee on a Clarks programme informed the way his ethos has developed. Following a period in industry his first academic appointment was as a researcher at Strathclyde University in the Pay and Reward Research Centre. There, as a consequence of the research conducted he developed close links with practitioners, intermediaries and policy makers, something he has strived to maintain as his career progressed. Common themes in his work are: a strong commitment to conducting research in collaboration with practitioners; a focus on action and change; an interest in and commitment to the development of doctoral students and the development of capacity within the sector. Richard has been past president and chair of the British Academy of Management and member of the ESRC Training and Development Board. He is currently chair of the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies.

Good grounding for those without a scientific background

This book was recommended to my MBA class to help us plan and conduct our final research projects. Having a scientific PhD, I didn't expect to learn quite as much as I did. In fact, I expanded my repertoire of measurement techniques, particularly picking up some interesting new methods for objectively assessing subjective issues (which are relatively common in management research but anathema to many fact-based pure science academics). My colleagues on the course who actually read it raved about the book, even those from an arts or social science background, so the author's style is clearly accessible.

He organizes a movement to send gifts to Santa, who is so moved by this response that he gives up his plans and gets back on the sleigh. This lengthy poem, originally published in 1957, is given fresh life with jolly new illustrations. The narration refers back to a specific Christmas when Santa decided to take a holiday from delivering presents. When the news breaks, children dissolve in tears, except for Ignatius Thistlewhite, who inspires children the world over to unite in a giant campaign to give gifts to Santa. Santa is understandably moved by the outpouring and has the elves stack all the toys that were intended for the children in the sleigh to make room for the new stuff. Santa then realizes he wasn’t meant to have a vacation, and since the sleigh is packed and ready to go, he happily flies off to make his deliveries. Colorful cartoon illustrations give a sense of the activity without being overwhelmed by the magnitude of contributions collected for Santa. The length of this poem makes it inappropriate for a traditional storytime, but it could be used one-on-one or in a classroom situation. Grades K-3. --Randall Enos

About the Author
Author Phyllis McGinley was born on March 21, 1905, in Ontario, Oregon. In 1908, the family relocated to Colorado; they moved to Ogden, Utah, after the death of McGinley's father. McGinley was educated at the University of Southern California and at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. After receiving her diploma in 1927, she taught for a year in Ogden and then at a junior high school in New Rochelle, New York. Once she had begun to establish a reputation for herself as a writer, McGinley gave up teaching and moved to New York City, where she held various jobs, including copywriter at an advertising agency and poetry editor for Town and Country. She married Charles Hayden in 1937, and the couple moved to Larchmont, New York. The suburban landscape and culture of her new home was to provide the subject matter of much of McGinley's work.

McGinley was elected to the National Academy of Arts and Letters in 1955. She was the first writer to win the Pulitzer for her light verse collection, Times Three: Selected Verse from Three Decades with Seventy New Poems (1960). McGinley's other books of poetry include Confessions of a Reluctant Optimist (Hallmark Editons, 1973); Love Letters (1954); Stones from a Glass House (1946); A Pocketful of Wry (1940); One More Manhattan (1937); and On the Contrary (1934). In addition to poetry, McGinley wrote essays and children's books, as well as the lyrics for the 1948 musical revue Small Wonder. She died February 22, 1978, in New York City.

Illustrator John Manders was educated at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and later took courses at the School of Visual Arts and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where he studied children’s illustration, animation, and life drawing. His interests include puppetry (he studied that at Syracuse University College) and trying to speak Italian.

John's work is featured in over 30 children’s books and gazillions of children’s magazines. He's a member of the Society of Illustrators, the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators, and is a founding member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators. John was also their first president.

cute Christmas tale

What would happen if Santa Claus decided not to make his rounds one year? Through the years our boys, and my wife, have enjoyed watching the 1974 Rankin/Bass stop motion animated television special The Year Without a Santa Claus narrated by Shirley Booth as Mrs. Claus with Santa Claus voiced by Mickey Rooney. However, I didn't know this until recently, but the story is based on a 1956 Phyllis McGinley book of the same name.

Of course, all this happened "long ago before you were living." Santa wakes up on the wrong side of the bed with a crick in his neck, a cold in his nose, and aches in his fingers and all ten toes. So he decides to take his first vacation in one thousand years. The Elves, the reindeer, the Gnomes, and, most of all, the children around the world are upset when they find out. Most give way to tears, but then one six-year old boy named Ignatius Thistlewhite comes to Santa's rescue, and children everywhere band together to give Santa a Christmas he'll never forget! What is their plan? And will it work?

The story, which is a little long for most traditional story times but could be used as a bedtime read aloud, is told in a flowing rhyme, originally illustrated by Kurt Werth. This new edition has jolly illustrations with gouache and pencil cartoon artwork by John Manders that emphasize the humor of the text. It is a cute Christmas tale. Phyllis McGinley (1905-1978), who was the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize in 1961 for her book Times Three, the first to be awarded the poetry prize for a collection of light verse, produced a sequel of sorts, How Mrs. Santa Claus Saved Christmas (1963).

Cute and different

We enjoyed this book very much. It is a long poem about one year when Santa decides to take a vacation. My son enjoyed the story and I also enjoyed the words (and names) they used to come up with rhymes. I would recommend it for grades 1 - 4th.

This is a charming new rendition of Phyllis McGinty's classic tale, "The Year Without a Santa Claus."

The wind and snow swirled around Santa's home and a lone light lit up the dark in the early morning. Santa sat at the edge of his bed thinking while he stroked his beard. "Great North Star," he exclaimed to himself, "but I'm tired." Every little thing in his body seemed to hurt when the thought about going on that Christmas Ride. It was very difficult and when he ambled off to his workshop to look at all the toys, it looked impossible. There were dolls, trains, bicycles, cowboy hats, baseball gloves, and even a rocking horse. Santa Claus hadn't had a vacation in a thousand years and maybe it was about time he had one.

Santa began to move into action letting everyone know about the change in plans. "Warn the people, tell the papers, / I'm much too tired for Christmas capers. / Crick in may back, a cold that lingers, / aches in my toes and all ten fingers ..." In other words, there would be no Christmas. Word began to get around that Santa Claus was too tired and wasn't coming. It was even in the newspaper and all the children began to cry "except for Ignatius Thistlewhite." Of course being six-years-old, Ignatius knew one thing and that was that "Santa deserves a holiday!" There was something extra special that had to be done, but what could all the children do for Santa?

This is a charming new rendition of Phyllis McGinty's classic tale, "The Year Without a Santa Claus." The tale does have that retro feel, especially with the Disneyish looking Santa illustrations. Naturally there isn't a youngster anywhere who can imagine a year without that special man. The verse works well either read in a poetic or straightforward manner. Review of Well Driven Nails

Before getting into my review of "Well Driven Nails" by Byron Yawn, I feel that I must point out a couple of details. First, I am reviewing the book of my pastor and I am glad to have the opportunity. Secondly, I review the book having witnessed the difference that this project has made on Byron Yawn as a man, as a pastor, and as an expositor, that preaches the Word of God every week. I would also like to note that this review is being written from a layman's perspective which is important to note because "Well Driven Nails" is a work aimed at encouraging and exhorting pastors... preachers of the Word. So, why should anyone other than a pastor read "Well Driven Nails"? Well, for starters this reader/reviewer was encouraged and exhorted as a layman. The book also provided wonderful insight into the spiritual life of my pastor, as well as the men he writes about.

Well Driven Nails is the result of Byron Yawn's D. Min. degree that focused on expository preaching. The idea for the book came from his desire to pinpoint what was missing in his preaching and address the issue head on. Byron proceeded to "pick" the brains of the expositors that he admires most to discover what they found was missing in their delivery. His criteria in selecting the interviewees were clarity, depth, and passion. The result is three great conversations with what the modern evangelical world considers giants of reformed theology, they also happen to enjoy pastorates that span decades for each: more than 100 years of pastoral and expository preaching experience between them. We hear from John MacArthur on clarity, R.C. Sproul on depth, and John Piper on passion. These men share what it is to empty their self as a pastor for the sake of the Gospel. It is not academics, it is life, and it is life and death. It would be impossible for me to relay through this review the depth of wisdom that these three men share in Well Driven Nails. I cannot even begin to express the impact that this project has obviously had on my pastor.

As a layman I recommend Well Driven Nails, first, to any pastor that is in that rut and is tired of going from one "church in a box" program to another. Your congregants will not be affected for Christ when, you, their minister, is living in that box. The time has come to preach the Word with clarity, with depth, with passion to be real for and with your congregation. For the layman, this book will help you to better understand the trials pastor's experience that is difficult for them to talk about. It is important to take to heart the truths of Well-Driven Nails that will transform your approach to "expository listening". The Word of God is a connection to the Christian life and pastors pour their own life out for the sake of the Gospel. We all need to thank God for the messages our solid ministers preach by showing them our appreciation by living a transformed life. For my fellow congregants at Community Bible Church, read the book not because Byron wrote it, but because he poured his heart and love for Christ and you into it.

Preaching That's Leadership

Byron's preaching is leadership. It's leadership because it's not only an exposition of the scripture but an exposition of his own soul caught in the grip of the cross. This book is the same way--a transparent self-examination that will show the frustrated preacher how to find his voice, and so to lead his people.

An Encouraging Read for the Preaching Class

In an area of Christian literature that is well-stocked and seemingly over-crowded at times, Byron Yawn not only presents a book that is up-to-par but actually brings insight to the subject of preaching. Make no mistake, this book was written for a very specific demographic: the preacher. More specifically, the preacher who is stumped or slumping or plateauing in his growth as a speaker or teacher of God's most precious word. Yawn--despite his name--will restore a preachers excitement, not only for preaching on Sundays, but for exegesis and the personal growth that comes only from a relationship with God that is foundational to sermon preparation. He takes the reader through three main characteristics that define effective preaching: clarity, simplicity, and passion; Yawn then selects well-respected preachers who embody each characteristic and explains what each person aims for in their preaching and why. The structure and form of this book is both engaging and clear, in fact, the book itself embodies the three characteristics it seeks to teach about. It is clear. It is simple. And it is passionate.

Personally, I found this book extremely helpful especially as I prepared a sermon of my own this week. Yawn's combination of technical helps and interviews with the likes of John MacArthur (clarity), R.C. Sproul (simplicity), and John Piper (passion) made this a book I couldn't put down. Throughout the week I would take breaks in my sermon preparation to read this book and then turn back to my preparation with new insight and motivation to love God and the Word that He provided for us! In reading this book, I was able to directly implement many of these encouragements to my sermon preparation, and it definitely created a new experience for me as a preacher. It was also encouraging to read about the convictions and the discipline of some of the most effective and God-glorifying preachers of our time. The book was full of humbling quotes and insights that had me up late at night, pondering the implications of my preaching. It was probably one of the most impactful books on preaching I've read thus far.

I would recommend this book, but to a very specific audience, namely the preaching class. Byron Yawn is very intentional in his introduction in making clear the aims and goals of the book: This book was hand-crafted for the preacher who is seeking to glorify God with faithful exposition, and might just need a little nudge in the right direction to become a more effective preacher. If that's you, then you need to read this book.

Realistic narrator, but hard to like her

New girl Rio expects to be a social outcast in her new school, so she is surprised when Kristi, the beautiful queen-bee mean girl, invites Rio into her clique. Rio quickly sheds the artsy friends she made her first day and embraces Kristi's offer. But being friends with Kristi comes with strings: Rio must make sure she's dressed to meet Kristi's approval, she is only allowed to date boys Kristi approves of, she must embrace Kristi's drug and alcohol habits, and above all else, Rio cannot outshine Kristi. Rio is happy enough to comply, but when Rio's popularity begins to eclipse Kristi's, Kristi sets out to destroy Rio's social standing.

Filled with mean girl cattiness and teenage insecurities, Art Geeks and Prom Queens is a realistic portrayal of how a teenager in Rio's position would probably think, act, and feel. As a result, I can see why it has been included in recommended reading lists for so many schools. Rio's voice is believable and never sounded forced or like an adult trying too hard to sound like a teenager. Instead, I can completely believe that Rio is a real girl candidly describing a year in her life. In this regard, Art Geeks and Prom Queens will probably be a hit among its target audience (of which, I should point out, I do not fall into).

While Rio might ring true, she isn't entirely likable. For most of the book she passively goes along with all of Kristi's demands, trading morality for popularity. As a teenager, Rio's actions are pretty realistic. I mean, let's face it, how many teenagers are moral crusaders in the face of popularity? Still, while it's completely believable that Rio would, for example, date a popular guy and let him kiss her (and more) when she doesn't even really like him all that much, it isn't very easy to like her when she behaves so falsely. The rest of the characters are generic stereotypes without much depth or likability. The plot is equally shallow and trite with no surprises.

Rio does stand up for herself in the end, but her turn around rings a little hollow. She acknowledges some of her behavior and the regrets she has about it, but other behaviors (like drug use) are never repented and there is no indication that Rio will stop. Teens may find Rio easy to relate to, but without adult guidance on discussions about the book, I wonder if the book might be sending the wrong messages about certain behaviors. There are plenty of other books and movies to choose from in the "mean girl" and "lifestyles of the rich and fabulous" genres, most of which I've found are more enjoyable reads.

"Heathers" for the new generation

This was an enjoyable read. It tells the story of Rio, who's named after a Duran Duran song. She lives with her former model mother and lawyer father in Laguna Beach, but misses New York and her friends there (they recently moved).

Rio makes a couple of friends from her art class in Laguna Beach, but then Kristi, cheerleader and queen bee, takes her under her wing. Suddenly, Rio has to follow rules...who to associate with, which boys to like, how to dress...or otherwise make Kristi mad. Everyone tiptoes around Kristi. But then, a fateful game of spin-the-bottle seals Rio's destiny. Kristi's not talking to her anymore, and she's turned the whole school against her.

This was an insightful look at high school cliques, the fear of those in power, and also just a fun bubbly read that made me remember being a teenager. The writing was pitch-perfect and really sounded like a young adult.

Juicy reading where mean girls and expensive clothes take center stage

Transplanted from New York, Rio (like the Duran Duran song, not the city in Brazil) feels out of place in ritzy Newport Beach, California. Her mother is obsessed with redecorating and Juicy Couture sweatsuits, and her dad travels too much for her liking. Even though Rio is fairly happy as a class-cutting art geek, she is soon invited into the most popular clique in school.

Kristi, the clique's feared leader who lives "on coke, both diet and Columbian," christens Rio her "best friend." Rio's climb to the top of the popularity food chain comes fast, and her fall comes even faster. After a disastrous party kills her popularity, Rio knows she'll have to rely on her own wits and bravery to set things right. Or at least sort of right.

If you're itching for the next Gossip Girl novel, ART GEEKS AND PROM QUEENS may be the book for you. Although the setting is sunny beaches and South Coast Plaza instead of Central Park and Fifth Avenue, mean girls and expensive clothes still take center stage. Despite the superficiality of a number of characters, Rio learns a lot about self-reliance and true friendship, making her a little more interesting than Blair and Serena. The Lost Girls Rediscovered.

In the early twentieth century one of the best jobs young girls and women in America could have involved something exciting and brand new: radium. Sparkling, glowing, and beautiful, radium was also, according to the companies that employed these young women, completely harmless. A century later the truth about radium and its assorted isotopes is all too well known. In The Radium Girls Kate Moore tells the story of these young women, seemingly so fortunate, who were poisoned by the jobs they felt so lucky to have.

Radium was widely heralded as a wondrous new substance after it was first isolated by the Curies. It appeared to have an infinite number of uses, one of the first of which was to make the numbers on clocks and watches easier to see. Workers were needed to coat the dials with radium paint, and the best and most efficient workers were women and girls, some as young as 14 or 15. The work was pleasant and sociable: the women sat around tables painting, moistening the thin brushes in their mouths before they dipped them into the paint, chatting, eating, and drinking while they worked, sometimes taking extra paint home with them to practice with, sometimes painting their teeth, faces, hair, and clothing to make them sparkly. When they left the studio their clothing would be covered with radium dust, and would glow ghost-like in the night. The pay was good and the work was easy, but then some of the women started having strange pains in their mouths and bones. Their teeth would loosen and fall out and their jaws, legs, and ankles would develop permanent aches or even crumble.

After some of the women died and more became ill the companies making large profits on radium rushed to dismiss any hint that the work was unsafe. Victims and their families sought relief and assistance, but found they were responsible for their own mounting medical bills. The federal, state, and local governments all disavowed any responsibility. Eventually publicity stemming from lawsuits filed by some of the victims (using their own scanty resources) focused enough attention on the problem that governments felt compelled to set safety standards and regulations.

The Radium Girls is a horrifying read. The careless ways in which radium was handled, the indifference of the radium using industries and the governments involved to the safety of the women painters (in contrast to the men who worked to produce the radium, who were protected by lead shields), and the pain and suffering of the women themselves are appalling. The safety regulations and restrictions which were finally put into place hardly seem adequate, and the Epilogue and Postscript giving details of the women's later lives, as well as an account of another industry that made careless use of radium as late as the 1970s, are especially harrowing.

This is a well written, meticulously research and documented, account of tragedies that never should have been. The radium girls' lives can't be returned to them, but thanks to Kate Moore we can remember, and learn, from their pain.

Haunting book - absolutely a must-read!

This is one these books that will stay with you long after you finished reading it. The suffering, the indifference, the greed, the lies, the audacity... 90 years later it is still easy to imagine it happening over and over again.

Brilliant book

One of the best books I have read in a long time! Telling the story of the Radium Girls from the standpoint of the girls/women who were victimized by corporate greed and their battle for their rights was wonderful. Kate Moore brought these brave women to light in a brilliant manner. I had trouble putting this book down and highly recommend it.

I accept that the way I tell the story of that night on the train might not be the way it actually happened, in specific detail, in exact rhythm and tone and sequence; this version has received a little lacquer here and there as life piled up on it; to simplify it or make it feel better or cleaner a few facts have possibly been dropped out or slipped in; perhaps even a few images have been recolored or restored to a brightness they never had. That’s what time and the mind do, for better or worse, and only a fool would deny it. Through the window I can see the purple black between the stars, and the moon rising in the corner, and I think this night, as that one, can’t last; the black will begin to fade slowly to gray, and the morning light will bring with it the end.

Disappointed With Ending

I was sold on this book before I read it because I'd heard the author speak at a book signing. I liked him immediately and appreciated all he had to say about his experience as a writer/reader. I have not read any of his previous (non fiction) books, but have downloaded one on my MP3 player (In Broad Daylight). I have not listened to it yet. I was excited to read his 1st novel "Joy of Killing", & despite being a rather slow reader, I finished it in two sittings. I just finished it this eve, and am sorry to admit that I was left disappointed. The writing is definitely exemplary. The book held my attention throughout. As a psychologist, I was fascinated by the mental torture of the protagonist, and his vacillation between his recollection of events, and his being admittedly unsure regarding the accuracy of those memories. That all rang true to me - not uncommon in insightful individuals. However the ending left me unsatisfied. I know from hearing the author speak, that the ending of a novel was critical to him as an author. He was determined to not make the same mistakes of other authors whose book conclusions were fraught with problems, trying up details too quickly or leaving many unanswered questions. I do not want to write a "spoiler" review, so I will not give details of the specifics why I was left disappointed with the ending. "Joy of Killing":is definitely worth reading. I will look forward to read more reviews of this book. So far 18 of the 19 reviews have all been 5 stars. So my being unhappy with the ending is definitely in the minority.

The Joy of Killing makes me question what's wrong with me since I liked it so much... very dark

Whoa!! The Joy of Killing is twisted!! Makes me wonder what's wrong with me that I liked it so much. This took psychological thriller to the next level. I was unable to put it down even though I wanted to take a break to eat or walk my dog I just could not put it down. I still don't know if I got it but I loved it. It's kind of like a mix between the writing of Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk and the Inception movie and maybe a little Sixth Sense rolled into one messed up book. I would highly highly recommend if you're a fan of suspense/thrillers.

Spellbinding, psychological thriller

Romantic, erotic and tender - frightening, menacing, violent: the two sides of a man revealed in a deeply compelling psychological mystery.
This novel kept me under its spell entirely. And the truths it reveals about the place of longing, guilt, shame, doubt and delusion in the life of its protagonist are profound for all men, and the women who love them.
