Selfish hero - poor writing

This was one of the more selfish and juvenile heroes I've ever read. He was hot and cold, broke into the heroines house when she (very understandably) didn't want to see him but when he didn't want to see her he insulted her deeply. He was a bully and even if he claimed he loved how strong she was, he never allowed her to be herself. Always complaining if he didn't get things exactly his way. What a whiner.

If that was not enough - the writing was awful. Often sentences meant the opposite of what I think the author must have meant. But these things happen when you don't know the difference between forgetful and forgetable. Or new and knew. Or your and you're. English is my third language and even I could see how badly this was written.

Not a book I would recommend even if it was refreshing having a heroine who forgot the one-night-stand she'd had two years prior.

When Cato finds a beautiful woman in Times Square on New Year's Eve he has the most memorable night of his life. When he wakes up the next morning his life will never be the same. Instead of finding the beautiful woman, he finds a note signed -K- Cato doesn't know anything about this woman other than she lives in California. No Name...Nothing to help him find her.

Two years later when Cato takes on a client named Katarina he can't believe who sits right across the table from him. His one-night stand from New Year's Eve. The one woman that changed his life. Cato has never believed in fate.....until that moment.

One downfall.....she doesn't remember Cato.

She wants to hire Cato as her boyfriend because her parents are pushing her to marry their friends' son, Joey, whom is a dear friend to Kat but she doesn't want a relationship with him. Her parents own a winery and Joey's parents own a shipping company. If the two of them were to get married it would be a great business decision.

Cato doesn't know what to think. He can't believe that she doesn't remember a thing from their night together. He has thought of the passion that they shared for two years and now that she is in his life again he is determined to not let her get away again.

Katarina has changed from the fun loving girl that Cato remembers to a serious almost sad person. Cato wants to prove that she is fun loving and carefree when she allows herself to be.

Will Cato convince Katarina to give him a real shot at Love or will the secret she is hiding destroy them ?

Refreshing new story but pace is still to fast

In the third book of the series we follow Cato and Katrina who have a one night stand and then meet up 2 years later and see that it meant more to Cato then Katrina.

Cato is the player who has a string of one night stands and is the guy who leaves in the middle of the night so when someone does it to him, it does hit his ego. It understandable that he would be frustrated that she doesn't remember him no matter what he did and I liked how he spent the time to fall for her again and make her fall for him despite her reservations.

Katrina has had to deal with a loss that unfortunately a lot of people go through and I liked how closed off she was to giving love a second chance. I know if it were me I would be hesitant to jump back on the saddle so to speak. But as she falls for Cato, she deals with that struggle with guilt that most people do when moving on.

It was refreshing for the relationship between Cato and Katrina because it wasn't like the last two books but the explanation for why Katrina didn't remember him was a little weak. It didn't really make sense and didn't seem fully believable.

I found Joey's character rather annoying but I think that was the point. I don't think Todd wanted us rooting for Joey in any regard, even if it was out of pity.

I liked that the characters had different issues they needed to work through but there were some grammatical errors that took from the story. The was again a little to fast but it was not enough to not make me not want to read it.

About the Author

John Keown holds the Rose Kennedy Chair in the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University, one of the world's premier centres of research into ethics.

Having graduated in law from Cambridge he took a doctorate at Oxford and was then called to the Bar of England and Wales. Before being elected to the Rose Kennedy Chair he taught the law and ethics of medicine in the Faculty of Law at Cambridge, where he was a Fellow of Queens' College and of Churchill College. Professor Keown has written widely in the field of the law and ethics of medicine. His research has been cited by distinguished bodies worldwide, including the United States Supreme Court, the Law Lords, the House of Commons, the House of Lords Select Committee on Medical Ethics, and the Australian Senate, one of several bodies before which he has been invited to testify. He has served as a member of the ethics committee of the British Medical Association. In 2011 he testified as an expert witness for the Attorney-General of Canada in a case challenging Canada's prohibition of assisting suicide and voluntary euthanasia.

for a chemistry book, it's pretty decent

I'm not a big fan of chemistry or anything, but this was actually a pretty useful book. It is easy to read, has lots of examples, and systematically goes through each type of organic molecule you might encounter and tells you how to recognize one, name it, what it's chemical properties are, some info about where they are found and how they're used, and how they are made, broken down, and how they react with other compounds.

One thing that is lacking is how a lot of the chemistry actually works sometimes. They might just show the reactants and the products and expect you to memorize it, rather than learning the process behind it. But, I guess that's part of the limitations of it being a 'short course'.....

Documenting a deserving guitarist

Classic rock fans are generally familiar with guitar gods such as Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Robin Trower, Leslie West, and Frank Marino. Legends such as these brought excitement, creativity, virtuosity, and emotion to the electric guitar craft.

Far less known, at least in the United States, is Tony McPhee, guitarist/singer/songwriter/leader of the English group The Groundhogs. As a teenager and young man I was amazed by McPhee's unusual chord patterns and searing lead runs on albums such as Blues Obituary, Thank Christ For The Bomb, Split, Who Will Save The World? The Mighty Groundhogs!, Hogwash, The Two Sides of Tony McPhee, Solid, etc. Good gosh, could the man write songs and play a mean guitar!

Whereas Eric Clapton turned his back on the small group format of Cream to surround himself with big talent ensembles, becoming more and more commercial, McPhee [who turned down an invitation by John Mayall to replace Clapton when he departed the Bluesbreakers] kept plugging away in three and four piece bands, staying true to his artistic vision. His unique guitar work includes everything from electric psychedelia to hard rock, from slide to acoustic blues. McPhee's guitar could howl and roar and astound, only to softly and tenderly rip and tug at your emotions just a few bars later. Not to be overlooked by Tony's musicianship are his thoughtful lyrics of a left persuasion that addressed topics such as war and pollution and food reform. These serious lyrics were perfectly matched by McPhee's gruff and earnest voice, which unfortunately was recently affected by a stroke.

Tony McPhee is the real deal, a musician who for years paid his dues not unlike the struggling young Hendrix. Paul Freestone's book ECCENTRIC MAN [a valid description of McPhee as well as the name of one of his most popular songs, which has been covered by bands such as Queens Of The Stone Age] thoroughly documents McPhee's career, and includes extensive sections detailing gigs, radio and TV appearances, equipment, discography, etc.

From backing John Lee Hooker to headlining in English concerthalls to just trying to scratch out a living as a musician, Tony McPhee's story fascinates in today's era when rock groups all sound the same, molded by a capitalism that discourages art and creativity. It makes one realize that sometimes the breaks and timing just don't go a person's way, especially when you stay true to your principles. As Jimi once sang out when discovering that his key no longer fit his girlfriend's door: "That's alright, I've still got my guitar"!

The life & times of Tony (TS) McPhee, written by someone who knows!

Here's an excellent work about a British guitarist that has been largely ignored here in the US, namely Tony (TS) McPhee. Tony led The Groundhogs group for many years and through many different configurations, and author Paul Freestone documents every phase of the amazing career in loving detail. To be sure, this book is *not* a dry, academic compendium of the gigs, guitars, empty bottles and band members in the manner of some laundry list. Instead, author Freestone contextualizes his discussion of McPhee's genius by examining how the guitarist's life and work fit into and then influenced the British music scene. This is especially true in the earliest chapters where Freestone tells the story of McPhee's beginnings as a backing guitarist for John Lee Hooker and other US blues performers on their UK tours, and in the chapters documenting the years 1969-1972 where Groundhogs was making its best known records, including "Split" and "Blues Obituary." Besides getting loads of tasty facts about McPhee himself and the Groundhogs, which is certainly the main point, American readers will learn much about the complex issues of race (both in America and the UK), the role blues music played in the lives of English youth, and how the music industry worked in 1960s Britain.

Freestone has been criticized in some quarters for a lack of objectivity or impartiality, and it may indeed be the case that he sees McPhee's life through the legended 'rose-coloured glasses.' But Freestone is not playing at journalism here; instead, he expresses his opinion, openly and without apology. Whether or not such fondness for the subject is appropriate in a biographer, if anyone has earned the right to express his opinion about McPhee and the Groundhogs, it must be Freestone, considering the incredible amount and thoroughness of the research he's undertaken and which is evident throughout "Eccentric Man." My only criticisms of the book, and both are quite minor, is that there is the occasional typo and sometimes the text gets a bit repetitive.

Nevertheless, "Eccentric Man" is remarkably fun to read and the copious photos are very good and nicely reproduced. If you care at all about McPhee or you vaguely remember getting into a Groundhogs LP at some frat house party back in the day, then this book is one you'll enjoy. Grade = A.

Torben Juul Andersen is Professor of Strategy and International Management at the Copenhagen Business School and was Associate Dean of the MBA Program 2008-2012. He previously taught financial economics at George Mason University and Johns Hopkins University. He has held executive positions at Citibank/Citicorp Investment Bank, Unibank, SDS Securities and Hagler-Bailly Consulting. He is the author of numerous academic articles and books including Strategic Risk Management Practice (Cambridge University Press) and Perspectives on Strategic Risk Management (CBS Press). His articles have appeared in Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies, Long Range Planning, and Journal of Business Research among others. Dr Andersen holds a PhD in strategy and financial management from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MBA from McGill University, and an MSc in economics from the University of Copenhagen.

Maxine Garvey specializes in strategic and financial analysis particularly for enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of enterprises. She is Senior Operations Officer at the IBRD, World Bank. Previously she was a senior corporate governance officer and task manager for the SME corporate integrity program at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank. Prior to joining the IFC, Dr Garvey worked as a management consultant with Analysis Group (New York), AT. Kearney (Toronto), and PriceWaterhouseCoopers (Kingston). She provided advisory services in strategy and financial management, working with firms in a wide range of industries, including financial services, telecommunications, and retail. Dr Garvey has also taught strategy, finance, and international business at New York University and the Mona School of Business (MSB), University of the West Indies. In addition, she has worked as a manager in industry and consulting firms. Dr Garvey holds a PhD and MBA from Stern Business School.

Oliviero Roggi is Professor of Finance at the University of Florence. He was Visiting Scholar at NYU Stern School of Business in 2009, Salomon Center Research Fellow in 2010, and Visiting Associate Professor of Finance in 2011. Dr Roggi has published papers and books on risk management and rating models including Measuring and Managing Risk published by World Scientific Press with Ed Altman (eds). He co-authored the third Italian edition of Applied Corporate Finance with Aswath Damodaran and the IFC World Bank handbook Risk Taking: A Corporate Governance Perspective with Aswath Damodaran and Maxine Garvey. Dr Roggi founded the Finanza Firenze Research Center in 2007 and partnered with Professor Ed Altman in 2008 to establish the International Risk Management Conference. He is a consultant for the European Commission Regione Toscana and member of the Scientific Committee of the Country Risk Forum of the Italian Bankers Association (Associazione Bancaria Italiana - ABI).

About the Author

Louis D. Brown is a community psychologist and research faculty member of The Pennsylvania State University. His research examines how people engage in and benefit from self-help/mutual support initiatives. As a Research Associate at the Penn State Prevention Research Center, Dr. Brown also studies community health partnerships and the implementation of evidence-based programs to promote healthy youth development.

Scott Wituk, PhD, is the Director of the Center for Community Support and Research (CCSR) at Wichita State University. Previously he served as the Research Coordinator at CCSR. In these positions he has conducted community-based research projects with self-help groups, coalitions, nonprofits, and other community-based organizations. He has over 30 peer reviewed publications and book chapters and numerous professional presentations.

Reyes' voice is grounded in her community's traditions and histories, despite war and geographical dislocation.

Barbara Jane Reyes is author of two previous poetry collections including Poeta en San Francisco, which was awarded the 2005 James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. She was born in Manila and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She works as adjunct professor in Philippine studies at the University of San Francisco.

About the Author
Barbara Jane Reyes: Barbara Jane Reyes was born in Manila, Philippines and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She received her undergraduate education at UC Berkeley, and her MFA at San Francisco State University. She is the author of Gravities of Center (Arkipelago, 2003) and Poeta en San Francisco (Tinfish, 2005), for which she received the James Laughlin Award of the Academy of American Poets.

Reyes is a recent Pushcart Prize nominee, and her work has appeared or is forthcoming in numerous publications, including 2nd Avenue Poetry, Asian Pacific American Journal, Boxcar Poetry Review, Chain, Crate, Interlope, New American Writing, Nocturnes Review, North American Review, Notre Dame Review, Parthenon West Review, Shampoo Poetry, Tinfish, Versal, as well as in the anthologies Babaylan (Aunt Lute, 2000), Eros Pinoy (Anvil, 2001), InvAsian: Asian Sisters Represent (Study Center Press, 2003), Going Home to a Landscape (Calyx, 2003), Coloring Book (Rattlecat, 2003), Not Home But Here (Anvil, 2003), Pinoy Poetics (Meritage, 2004), Asian Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area (Avalon Publishing, 2004), 100 Love Poems: Philippine Love Poetry Since 1905 (University of the Philippines Press, 2004), The Lambda Award finalist Red Light: Superheroes, Saints and Sluts (Arsenal Pulp, 2005), Graphic Poetry (Victionary, 2005), The First Hay(na)ku Anthology (Meritage, 2005).
