About the Author

Jacques Defourny is professor of third sector economics at HEC Management School, University of Liege (Belgium) where he is also a director of the Centre for Social Economy. He was a founding coordinator (1996-2001) and then the first president (2002-2010) of the EMES European Research Network. His work focuses on comparisons of social enterprise models across the world and on conceptual and quantitative analysis of the third sector both in developed as well as developing countries

Lars Hulg�rd is professor of social entrepreneurship at Roskilde University (RUC), Denmark. He has been the president of the EMES International Research Network since 2010, and is the chair of the research group Social Innovation and Organizational Learning. He is the founder and co-director of the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and his research interests are on the relation between civil society, the third sector and social entrepreneurship as well as the role of social enterprise in the transition of the welfare state

Victor Pestoff is a professor at the Institute for Civil Society Studies, Ersta Sk�ndal University College in Stockholm, Sweden. His research focuses on the political impact of third sector organizations and cooperatives and he has published more than a dozen books on such topics. He is also a founding member of the EMES International Research Network

Exhaustive - but flawed

Anyone who wants to be an upper tier pastry chef would be advised to purchase this book for the exhaustive photos and recipes. There's no better idea source for artistic inspiration than this book. Because of this, I have to give it 5 stars. What I don't like about this book is that probably the most interesting parts of these creations are the chocolate and pulled sugar decorations. That's why I bought the book. So of course I want to know how to make those. But each time I saw something I wanted to make, it referred me to page 308 where there is a basic sugar syrup recipe. And that's it. So I make the recipe, then what?? I realize it's a bit complicated, but even an overview would be appreciated. I have a general notion of how to make sugar art but I wanted insight on how each of those ornaments were made. There was thorough instruction on how to make the tuile ornaments, like the abstract wafer on the cover. If you want to tackle any of these recipes, you will need a lot of time, research and education. Unless you're already a gourmet pastry chef of the top level. Then this would be a good idea file. So if you're looking for nice photos of pulled sugar and chocolate, this is great. If you're looking for a manual on how to make pulled sugar ornaments, this won't work.

We didn't know the extent ofthe many World and National Pastry Team Champtionships that existed prior to being introduced to this lovely volume, but each of the winners certainly deserves their well-deserved medals and laurel wreaths. The ingenuity and complexity of the desserts featured here are simply amazing. If the reader is up to the challenge of reproducing any of these stunning desserts in their own homes, detailed assembly instructions are provided, along with recipe directions in both grams and ounces. The desserts featured in Plating for Gold are sophisticated, minimalist,creative and in many cases one of a kind. So if you want to wow your guests with something more than creme brulee at your next party, Plating for Gold is for you!

THis is a great book, nothing in there is not to complicated to do, no crazy ingredients or techniques. Just the regular equipment, silicone pans, ice cream machine. Great detail on every dessert, plating illustrations, lots of pictures, great desserts in here. 30 bucks well spent, I have taken a couple of things out of here for my dessert menu as we speak

This is a great book and should be required reading for anyone who schedules software projects. Some of the data is out of date and readers should look to the website for updates. If this book contained current information it would easily be a 10.

A classic "must read" - but be aware of its limitations

"Software Engineering Economics" is *the* book to be considered for anybody wishing to seriously enter the world of software cost estimation - only if it were because of the extremely great influence this book has had on this very peculiar aspect of software engineering. In this aspect, Barry Boehm is undoubtly the master.
HOWEVER, it must be kept in mind that the book itself is somewhat outdated - COCOMO 81, as defined by Barry Boehm, has been overtaken by new technologies and in particular by the surge in PCs & the Internet. The basic model is still valid - I still use it myself - provided you are aware what the background in computing was when it was written, and you carefully assign the adjustment factors.
Barry Boehm himself recognizes that COCOMO 81 is no longer valid - hence his collaboration with COCOMO II, which has addressed many of the problems that affected the old COCOMO 81 (e.g., it was mainly thought for development of software on expensive mainframes, and development tools have greatly evolved since that time). Still, I insist, if you are careful when making your estimations, the model and the techniques presented in this book are very useful and could be applied even on more modern projects.
My second HOWEVER is related to use the model presented in this book for Software Maintenance purposes. Though the book has a chapter on this issue, by opinion is a radical NO-No on this particular issue. COCOMO 81 (as presented in this book) and COCOMO II are adequate for software development purposes. I totally disagree that they are adequate for software Maintenance purposes (though COCOMO II is at least not so very bad). Apart from the fact that it ignores things such as regression testing, or the number of releases to be made during such maintenance, it also ignores the fact that software "degrades" during such maintenance - subsequent modifications introduce more and more stress on the original design, until at a certain moment the software requires a great "overhaul" in order to solve a lot of patchwork that has accumulated over the years. Hence the typical case of having to redesign a complete new software system because maintenance of the old system becomes too expensive.
In any case, if aware of such limitations, I can highly recommend it.

Economic analysis of software decisions making

A classic reference on estimating the cost of software projects, economic analysis techniques, and applying economic principals to upper-level management of software projects. The intimidating appearance of the text on initial inspection is overcome by the author's excellent organization of the content into small chapters and his lucid writing style. The definition of a software cost model called the constructive cost model (COCOMO) is a major centerpiece. Another centerpiece is the chapters on cost-effectiveness analysis, multiple goal decision analysis, dealing with uncertainties and the value of information, software project planning and control, and improving software productivity. Alternatives to cost models such as experts, analogy, Parkinson, price-to-win, top-down, and bottom-up are discussed in Chapter 22. Uses several case studies for example a transaction processing system. Contains an excellent set of questions and exercises at the end of each chapter.
The COCOMO model is calibrated by industry data and expert opinion. Given module size estimates in lines of code as input the COCOMO model will predict effort and schedule in man-months. The COCOMO predictions cover the plans, product design, programming, and integration & test portions of the life cycle. The validity of the model is illustrated by charting actual vs. COCOMO prediction and the detailed analysis of the COCOMO cost driver attributes in Chapters 24-26. Product attributes are required software reliability (RELY), data base size (DATA), and product complexity (CPLX). Computer attributes are execution time constraint (TIME), main storage constraint (STOR), virtual machine volatility (VIRT), and computer turnaround time (TURN). Personnel attributes are analyst capability (ACAP), applications experience (AEXP), programmer capability (PCAP), virtual machine experience (VEXP), and programming language experience (LEXP). Project attributes are modern programming practices (MODP), use of software tools (TOOL), and required development schedule (SCED).
Readers should be aware that some aspects of the COCOMO have been replaced by the publication of the "Software Cost Estimation with COCOMO II" book. The "COCOMO II" book contains a preface section titled "Relation to 1981 Software Engineering Book". I recommend keeping a copy of this preface handy while you read "Software Engineering Economics" because it provides a chapter-by-chapter assessment of the relevance of the "Software Engineering Economics" content in the year 2000.

The Art of Planning -- an OK Game Collection, But Who's the Target Audience?

This is a review for Neil McDonald's first two instructive game collection books.

Neil McDonald has started to pop out game collections at a rate a little faster than he should. His first effort was Chess: The Art of Logical Thinking: From the First Move to the Last, which includes mostly modern games and a few classics, all grouped by opening. His second effort, The Art of Planning in Chess: Move by Move, covers all modern games, grouped by strategic theme. When the writer's notes are mostly prose, as they are in these two books, the writer has a tendency to disconnect the prose with the relevant variations. I felt that McDonald does a better job handling this connection using classic games than he does in using the more modern games. So, in this sense, the first book is a little better and targeted at a slightly lower rated audience. The first book also begins its move-by-move approach in the opening, where the planning book assumes that the reader already has that phase of the game under control.

It doesn't help that modern games are extremely complex affairs. Modern games require precise, razor-sharp calculation, in addition to highly sophisticated strategic thinking. In The Art of Planning in Chess: Move by Move, which covers modern games, McDonald upped the sophistication of his notes a notch, to accommodate a higher-rated audience, but I didn't feel as if the higher-level notes carried the book as well as they should have; and, to be honest, the book isn't really about planning -- it's just a collection of instructive games, with mostly prose notes, like the first book. Don't buy The Art of Planning in Chess if you're looking for a treatise on planning. Buy The Amateur's Mind: Turning Chess Misconceptions into Chess Mastery or How to Reassess Your Chess: The Complete Chess-Mastery Course(Exp. 3rd Edition). Either of these books is more about what you're looking for.

The problem with McDonald's annotation style is that he tends to gloss over important variations. When notes are mostly prose, it's important to include the most important suboptimal variations that your lower-rated readership might want to see. Unlike Chernev's Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained New Algebraic Edition or Euwe's Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur, two better books in the move-by-move genre that really get to the heart of what lower-rated players might be thinking, McDonald's work doesn't quite hit the mark.

Both books have typos and comma usage errors, the Art of Planning more so than Logical Thinking. The highlight of the two books is McDonald's extensive annotation to Cheparinov-Ivanchuk, Khanty-Minkyisk, 2005. We are treated to 13 pages of prose that vividly illuminates the positional maneuvering manufactured by these two top players in a delicate line of the Benko Gambit.

In general, McDonald's move-by-move books are good if you've already gone through the more classic books mentioned in this review and are looking for more. The notes will not harm your play, they just don't prove to be inspiring.

you won't regret buying it

i love this book. most chess books of this type, meaning the "heavy on verbal explanation, minimum of variations" aren't so interesting for people over 1600, but this one is. mcdonald uses modern games (up to 2006!) and isn't afraid to talk about more sophisticated positional ideas. not heavy duty study material, but extremely readable and useful stuff. also unusually nice font, cover, paper, typesetting.
my favorite quote: "Now all four units are grouped together in a mutually defending diamond shape."

Best way to get into studying master games

Chess is like a language, you need to see how it is used in a whole variety of situations. Complete games by masters is the best material for study using full immersion into various ideas, plans, techniques all being highly interrelated. This book helps to do it with well-commented games focusing on strategic principles. Many games are very modern and highly instructive; and the verbose style is highly attractive, especially for young players, who wants to grasp the art of studying master games on their own. Using this book, one could feel the presence of very experience coach, who knows what message an inspiring player should get from the games presented.

Of course, there are few other books with a similar approach (teaching by example in complete master games move by move), why is this book so exceptional? The engaging style of discussion, the quality of examples, and a good balance of game analysis with general commentary on strategic principles. This is ideal for player in 1200-1600 range maybe up to 1800. There is a sequel to this book by Neil Mcdonald (Chess Success: Planning After the Opening) from Batsford publisher, featuring the same high quality binding, beautiful page layout that is on par with Gambit books. Boths books are highly recommended for those who needs guidance and motivation to study master games. For those, who mastered these books, the famous book by John Nunn "Understanding Chess: Move by move" is a good next step.
