A great reference source for freelancers and bloggers to have handy. I think the Kindle version might be easier for some.

This is a great pocket grammar book to have around. I am a freelance writer/blogger and used this while proofing my last articles. It helped me brush up on a few things I've been overlooking. I found the reminder about how to use compound adjectives very helpful. Personally, I am not always sure when to use the hyphen for certain phrases. In reality, I forgot the rules. You will be very surprised to find out how much you've forgotten once you start using this book. I have the soft cover book and don't mind using it. However, I think the Kindle version might be easier for some to use. Regardless of the version it will come in handy. (I feel like buying some kindle for a few social media posters who need help...) I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. Well, I paid $0.01 for it.

The perfect campanion

This handy book is small and compact and easy to use. Not only does it come with examples of what not to use but what to use properly. It is divided into sections that make sense, are well organized, and includes index and table of contents so you can find what topic you are looking for easily. If anyone has a dictionary and thesaurus on their shelf, this must be included as well. This book is exceptional for all writers, students, and teachers. As a writer myself, this is staying near my keyboard at all times and I would recommend this book to everyone.

great guide

I love writing. It's one of my favorite hobbies. That having been said, there is a slightly less fun part to writing - which is editing and making sure you've used correct grammar. This doesn't always happen with me on things like amazon reviews, but for my more serious work, I really like to make sure I'm writing things correctly. This book has come in so handy for that. It's almost like a guidebook for when I get stuck. There's so much good information in here, and it's all laid out in a way that it's fairly easy to find what you're looking for. I definitely prefer the physical copy of this book to the kindle version because, for me personally, it's much easier to flip around with a physical book rather than a digital copy.

The physical book is really nice quality. It has a nice suede-textured cover and it's a great size - not too small or too large. I'm really pleased with this book and I would definitely recommend it to students or to anyone who enjoys writing. I received this product at a discount in exchange for an honest review.

Absolutely a must read

This book was recommended to me by a friend, and truely, this book confirmed to me what I have always conjectured about the nature of Indian society during Mughal period. "Emperors of the Peacock Throne" by Abraham Eraly, is published by Penguin Books, and hence, perhaps can also be baught in India through Penguin distributors. This book is about Mughals in India, great reading... just like "Freedom at Midnight" -by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, that would make you look at events in India's past with different perspective.

I found "Emperors of the Peacock Throne" very enlightening, and very thought provoking, and learned many new things about the nature of Indian society in Mughal times. Indian history text books, just like text books in any country including USA, UK, China or Japan, are highly sanitized versions. History of any nation can be very fascinating to read, but text books in most countries just skip over unpleasent facts in a line or two, or try to rationalize not so pleasing facts (e.g., plundering, killing and total decimation of native Indian cultures by Europeans in North America). Similarly, school text books in India, being too secular, just cannot criticize the Muslim rulers since that would most likely provoke largely illeterate muslim masses led by fundamentalist Mullahs (the same for equally trashy non-muslim amirs, landlords and kings that exploited, plundered and looted poor masses). So, this book provided a refreshingly fresh perspective, and if nothing else, you can read it as a story book. Here are some sample paragraphs from chapter titled "Death of the Future", page 218 describing the times of Aurengjeb, the last great Mughal emperor..

"Outwardly, the Mughal empire still glittered mesmerizingly, but within the golden, jeweled chrysalis, the flesh was rotting, the spirit dead. The land was desolate, the empire crumbling, its economy shattered, its government inefficient and irredeemably corrupt, its mammoth army flaccid and impotent, its culture effete, its people broken and spiritless only the Marathas displayed any vitality. But there was no future with the Marathas either. They could have seized the imperial scepter: it was theirs to take. They had the power. But they had no vision. The Marathas too were captains of the medieval, Hobbesian hell into which India was collapsing in the eighteenth century. India seemed to be a land where the future had died."

"This was not how India's destiny had seemed a century earlier, at the end of Akbar's reign. Indeed, in many respects the Mughal age was progressive. > "

Now fast forward to page 221 and contrast the situation of India described above to an earlier time of Mauryas and Chandragupta's.

"The decline of India's position relative to the rest of the civilized world specially Europe, is reflected in the contrasting perceptions of travelers in ancient and medieval India. Some 2000 years before Mughal times, Megasthenes, the Greek envoy in the Mauryan court, said of India character: "Truth and virtue they hold alike in esteem." Seven hundred years after Megasthenes, Fa Hsien, a Chinese travelers, had about the same thing to say of Indians, as did Hsuan Tsang in the seventh century, who wrote, " They do not practice deceit, and they keep their sworn obligations ... They will not take anything wrongfully, and they yield more than fairness requires."

Enjoyable, enlightening and thorough

I was transformed back 4-5 centuries throughout the book that for a while I longed to see that period of time

The most important part that stayed with me is the fact that India missed a big opportunity to transform itself during this period. Shame that such a opportunity was squandered when Akbar had laid down a perfect foundation.

Clearly, puts Mughals on par with any of greatest dynasties in the world.

Abraham has written this with more fact than fiction, more analysis than jingoism and a more rational perspective than a fanatic one.

One thing that perhaps was missing, if India was the richest nation then, why did it not reach out to become a modern one. How did it miss the revolutions in Europe during the same time period. Why did all the talent seen during previous dynasties such as Mauryan dynasty not bloom. Some of the conclusions in the book need a bit more explanation than concluding that a British rule was needed for that exercise.

History Brought To Life

This is a marvellous book. I like the way in which he has written the book, as he brings the old, dead Emperors back to life. This was truly the last, in a sense, golden age of India.

What he does, is to present the emperors as people. People who lived, grew and developed in India. He does present a more nuanced few of Aurangzeb than is presented in school text books, and also analyses the demise of the Mughal Empire extremely well.

It is indeed a saga, where nothing could be taken for granted, and where accession to the throne was fraught with danger. Yet, despite Hindu fundamentalists, they left something lasting for India. This is their gift, and this is what he talks about.

Huunnicutt's legendary 10-volume history of American tanks and armored vehicles provides a detailed survey of the American light tank's developmental history, culminating with the M551 Sheridan AR/AAV and the vehicles based on its design. In the period directly after WWII, the Army became interested in developing a light tank. Hunnicutt begins by detailing the program that eventually produced the M41 series of 76mm gun tanks that were designed to fulfill this interest. At 25 tons, the M4 was considered to be too heavy in spite of its popularity with the troops that operated it.

Programs developed in an effort to produce a lighter-weight tank resulted in the T71 and T92 tanks, both of which retained the 76mm gun and weighed in at about 17 tons. However, once it was discovered that Soviet tanks of the same caliber were amphibious, the T92 was scrapped to redirect design efforts to an amphibious light tank. This new program produced the XM551 Sheridan, no longer designated as a tank but rather as an "armored reconnaissance/airborne assault vehicle", or AR/AAV for short.

An extremely complex design, the M551 Sheridan AR/AAV was plagued by problems with its weapons system in its early stages. The vehicle required a great deal of frequent maintenance which made it unpopular with troops regardless of the fact that it provided a wide range of services. It was phased out of service in the late 1970s. Part III of this book covers the development of a future replacement for the Sheridan. Part IV covers several other light tracked combat vehicles.

A superb history of modern U.S. light tank development.

As a Vietnam-era US cavalry officer who commanded a Sheridan unit, I am all too familar with the operational problems during the M551's service life (ammunition, drive train, and missile system). It was a bear to keep the Sheridan going, but if we had gone to war, it was all we had in The Cav. I think Mr. Hunnicutt has done a very admirable job in detailing how this country went from an excellent recon tank (the M-41) to the miserable Sheridan. Let future generations of soldiers learn from the mistakes of my generation.P.S. This book is very heavy on detail - only those who love the smell of diesel and creaking tracks will totally comprehend the work that went into completing this research masterpiece.

M-551 Sheridan and more

Author R.P. Hunnicutt gives you more than just the M-551 Sheridan. In this book, he also traces the history of US Light Armor since WW2 to 1995. Included in the first 76 pages are complete studies of the M-41 Walker Bulldog, Light tank design concepts of the 1950's (very interesting to see all of the different ideas Detroit and the Army considered), engines, cannon, the T-95.

The next sections address the M-551 prototype, the testing, development and production of the Sheridan. This was a tank that tried to be everything for every one - light enough for airborne support, with a 152mm cannon/missile launcher for anti tank work, a scout vehicle. Regardless of your opinion of the tank itself, this is a fantastic collection of line drawings, cut aways; black and white photographs abound throughout the entire book. Another Masterpiece

What can anyone say? It is a Hunnicut book so it is the best. It has good coverage of the M41 and T92 predecessors which are of interest to me. It is sad that the book ends with the assumption that the M8 Armored Gun System will replace the M551. I don't think anyone anticipated that our 'leaders' would leave our Airborne Forces without a replacement AFV. There is some coverage of SP Artillery and some odds and ends that almost seem like a 'catch all' of things not included in other books of his work. This book is a must have for those that enjoy the "details".

I fully enjoyed this book

I fully enjoyed this book. I have seen the movie of the book before so I knew pretty much everything that was happening. So I can't judge if the story was suspenseful or not. However, the characters are definitely very different to the ones in the movie. I always can relate very well to the characters in Nora Roberts' books and it was no different here. That's why I enjoy her books so much.
